Endre Bajcsy-Zsilinszky (born  June 6, 1886 in Szarvas , †  December 24, 1944 in Sopronkőhida ) was a Hungarian politician , journalist and resistance fighter at the time of National Socialism .

Life

Bajcsy-Zsilinszky attended the evangelical high school (Evangélikus Gimnázium) in Békéscsaba . He studied law in Klausenburg , Leipzig and Heidelberg , where he received his doctorate in 1908.

Bajcsy-Zsilinszky was a co-founder of the National Radical Party (Nemzeti Radikális Párt) in 1930 , for which he was a member of the Hungarian Parliament until 1938. He later represented the party of small farmers there until his death .

During the Second World War , Bajcsy-Zsilinszky was one of the leading representatives of the resistance against the war participation of Hungary (since 1940) and the alliance with the German Reich .

After the occupation of Yugoslavia by the Axis powers of local Hungarian military chief was Ferenc Feketehalmy-Czeydner early 1942 in Újvidék (Novi Sad and Novi Sad), about 1,000 Jews and about 2,000 Serbs shoot . Endre Bajcsy-Zsilinszky took a leading role in protests in Hungary demanding that Feketehalmys be punished.

He was arrested by the Gestapo on March 19, 1944, but initially released on October 11. After the coup of hitler loyal Arrow Cross Party under Ferenc Szálasi on October 15, 1944 Bajcsy-Zsilinszky went into hiding, in November 1944 but was arrested again and on 24 December in Sopronkőhida hanged .

On May 27, 1945, he was honorably buried in Tarpa .
