history

Name and coat of arms

The name Kriessern comes from Gries (s), which means "coarse-grained sand, gravel, debris, alluvial debris" (cf. the special meaning of the linguistically identical semolina today ). -ere is a common Alemannic suffix that expresses a large amount of something. Griessere or in High German Kriessern is the "place where there is a lot of gravel and a lot of debris", which applies to the geographic location of the place.

The coat of arms contains an oak , a lion and an orb (in the lion's paws ).

  • Oak: The oak was the most famous tree between the rivers and the swampy area. The majority of the Hofwald was also an oak forest. The many place names in the valley (Eichenwies, Eichberg, Eichholz) bear witness to this. The fruit of the oak, the acorn, used to be used as fattening feed for pigs, as food for people in times of need and also as a coffee substitute.
  • Lion: The lion used to be the most important heraldic animal and was already known as a royal symbol in ancient Egypt.
  • Imperial orb: The imperial orb recalls the time when the imperial court was directly subordinate to the German Empire and was donated by King Heinrich VII, the abbot of St. Gallen, in 1229. The sphere already served the Roman emperors as a symbol of rule (spherical shape of the cosmos).

Early to the 19th century

The most important events in the history of the village of Kriessern in chronological order:

  • 1164: first mention of the name Kriessern «Griezarrûn»
  • 1229: The "Hof Kriessern" is mentioned for the first time in a document dated August 18, 1229. This date is considered the official founding date of Kriessern
  • 1229: King Heinrich VII bequeaths the Kriessern estate to the St. Gallen monastery
  • 1278: King Rudolf gives the Kriessern court as a fief to his savior in the battle on the Marchfeld , Heinrich Walter von Ramschwag , from the family of the Barons von Ramschwag
  • 1490: The Kriessern court becomes a subject of the Swiss Confederation and remains so until 1789
  • 1789: The Reichshof Kriessern belongs to Hof Oberriet. The political administration of the region was transferred to Hof Oberriet as early as 1755, as it was in a better location (lower risk in terms of flooding and location on the new Rhine Valley road along the mountainside).
  • 1803: At the same time as the canton of St. Gallen, the political municipality of Oberriet is founded. The free Reichshof Kriessern becomes part of the political community.

Earlier village customs that disappeared in the 20th century

  • Zopfganten: On New Year's Eve, the village bakers brought fresh egg braids to the inn. The fine pastries were a rarity back then! The men were able to grab a piece of braid for New Year's morning meal . Initially, three cards from a game of Jass cards were auctioned off. The baker made his egg braids available for the auctioned amount (from 20  centimes to 2 francs ). The deck of cards was reshuffled. The Gantleiter showed one card after the other and the owner of each card could choose a braid, which he then brought home and placed on the breakfast table the next morning, much to the delight of the whole family.
  • Bruutwägala: A few days before the marriage, the bride had the new furniture carried to the new home on a decorated carriage.
  • New Year's letter: On the New Year's afternoon, according to the Christian doctrine, the village youth went to the New Year's letter. In groups we went from house to house. At the entrance to the house they shouted: "Mör wüüsched öü a Glückseeligs Nöüjoor, that he be healthy and long-läabid, and that he would be stable in heaven." (Endorsement: "If he can do it, ropfed me at the Hoor!") Each participant then received a few cents. Relatives of the children collected silver pieces, the others only copper coins. Part of the amount was given to the pastor as a mission contribution in the next religious lesson.
  • Schtubata: The peasant women, who are required to work in the house and yard throughout the year, often met up with friends in the winter for afternoon coffee and cake. Village news were discussed, as well as native songs sung, the Kriessner Hoazigliad never lacked.
  • Whitsun tamanna: Straw dolls were hung from a tree at night for the Whitsun festival near the house of married virgins. On the early morning of Pentecost, however, they were torn down again by those affected.
  • Hülschat: In the autumn after the «Törggariifi» (corn ripening), the corn cobs were brought home to the room. In the evening, the «Shelfarat» or «Hältschat», the joint peeling of the corn on the cob, took place in good company. All but three of the piston leaves were torn off, four pistons were tied together on the leaves and then hung to dry in the screed. After the work was done, the cozy Vespers followed, a get-together with singing and dancing to the music of the "Schnoragiiga" (harmonica).
  • Loastaag: In Kriessern there were twelve Lostage (from Christmas Heiligtag counted). The weather conditions were recorded on these days. The six days in the old and the six days in the new year were used as a weather forecast for the next twelve months. In the "Budik" (workshop) of the then well-known Wagnerian Johann Baumgartner, twelve circles with corresponding weather signs, sun, rain and clouds could be seen on a black board.

free time activities

The area around Kriessern with a dense network of car-free agricultural roads (often along smaller or larger rivers) is particularly suitable for sporting activities such as running, cycling or horse riding. The many clubs cover a wide range of leisure activities.

tourism

  • Camping and swimming: In Kriessern there are two campsites, each with a natural lake. Both natural lakes were created by mining gravel deposits, which were needed for the construction of the protective dams on the Rhine and for the construction of the A13 motorway. The dredged gravel holes filled with groundwater and Rhine pressure water and today form two beautiful natural pools. The quarry pond is the larger of the two lakes and is located outside Kriessern in the direction of Montlingen . The Baggersee-Camping has 82 permanently rented annual spaces plus three public day spaces. The Sonnensee is located in the middle of the village of Kriessern. Sonnensee-Camping rents out a number of day pitches, so in addition to the bathing lake, the campsite is also open to the public.
