Eichenwies is a village in the Rheintal constituency of the canton of St. Gallen .
geography
Bounded by the Rhine and the foothills of the Alpstein Mountains , Eichenwies lies in the heart of the St. Gallen Rhine Valley .
Eichenwies belongs to Montlingen , Kriessern , Kobelwald and the hamlets of Moos, Rehag, Stieg, Freienbach, Stein, Kobelwies, Watt and Hard to the political municipality of Oberriet .
The village in numbers
As of December 31, 2009 Eichenwies had 1,374 inhabitants. This corresponds to the 18 percent share of the municipality of Oberriet, which has a total of 8,102 inhabitants.
history
Eichenwies developed strongly in terms of population at the end of the 20th century and has now fully merged with the village of Oberriet.
The splendid “Rothus” half-timbered building, once the seat of the municipal administration, is in Eichenwies and now houses the municipal museum.
Infrastructure
The Oberriet train station and some commercial enterprises, shops and restaurants are located in the Eichenweis district. The school house for the primary level and the kindergarten; the chapel dedicated to St. Joseph (17th century / new building around 1951) and the cemetery are also part of the townscape. The Catholics of Eichenwies belong to the parish of Montlingen, which is part of the Blattenberg pastoral care unit. The Reformed believers are looked after by the rectory in Eichberg and in 1987 they set up a parish hall in Eichenwies in the former cinema on Bahnhofstrasse.
