geography

Retzbach is located in the Weinviertel in Lower Austria. The area of ​​the municipality covers 18.15 square kilometers. 6.34 percent of the area is forested.

Community structure

The municipality includes the following three localities (population in brackets as of January 1, 2020):

  • Mitterretzbach (235)
  • Oberretzbach (128)
  • Unterretzbach (659) including Kleinhaugsdorf

The community consists of the cadastral communities Mitterretzbach, Oberretzbach and Unterretzbach.

The community belongs to the small region of Retzer Land .

Neighboring communities

history

From autumn 1944 to mid-April 1945 Jewish forced laborers from Hungary were housed in Mitterretzbach. Twenty-one Wehrmacht deserters were shot in Oberretzbach in the spring of 1945.

The former municipalities of Mitterretzbach and Oberretzbach were merged on January 1st, 1966 to form the new municipality of Retzbach, and on January 1st, 1970, the municipality of Unterretzbach was incorporated.

Population development

The increase in the population between 2001 and 2011 is based on a positive balance of migration , the birth balance has always been negative in recent decades.

Economy and Infrastructure

In 2010 there were 77 agricultural and forestry operations in Retzbach. Of these, 43 were full-time farms that farmed over 90 percent of the area. The manufacturing sector employed 44 people in ten plants, mainly in construction and the manufacture of goods. In the service sector, 37 companies gave work to 70 people.
