The Roman Catholic parish church Unterretzbach stands on the south-eastern edge of the village on a hill in the village of Unterretzbach in the municipality of Retzbach in the Hollabrunn district in the Weinviertel in northern Lower Austria . The church consecrated to St. James the Elder - incorporated into Lilienfeld Abbey - belongs to the Deanery Retz-Pulkautal in the vicariate Unter dem Manhartsberg of the Archdiocese of Vienna . Until September 1, 2016, she was part of the Retz dean's office . The church building is under monument protection .

history

The baroque building dates from 1725 (the rebuilding of the church is also given as 1620) and was built on the site of an older, presumably Gothic church. This may have been built before 1300, although the lower parts of the church tower could be from Roman times.

The Lilienfeld abbot Chrysostom Wieser acted as the builder of the church - his coat of arms can be found in the stucco decoration above the altar. Today's park served as a cemetery until around 1900. Foundations of a karner were discovered at one point on the wall .

Wall frescoes depicting the birth of Christ, Epiphany , Resurrection and Pentecost adorn the interior, and stucco work can also be seen.

Furnishing

The pulpit is made of marble; In front of the altar there is a crypt with a Romanesque vault. The picture of the high altar, made in 1795 by Martin Grassinger , shows the church patron James the Elder; At the bottom right is a view of Unterretzbach in the 18th century.

The church organ, built in 1776, was made by the south Moravian organ builder from Znojmo (then Znaim) Josef Silberbauer , who built or looked after around 20 church organs in northern Lower Austria as well as in southern Moravia. It has two manuals, an independent pedal and 15 stops. In the following period the organ was reconstructed seven times.

Pastor

Father Mgr. Peter Egýd Tavel from Trebišov (Slovakia), who belongs to the Dominican order and is also a psychotherapist, psychologist and dean and professor at the Palacký University in Olomouc, is responsible for the parish . The parish has a little over 600 believers.
