The Pfronten-Steinach train station is one of the three train stations in Pfronten , next to Pfronten-Ried and Pfronten-Weißbach, but the latter is only a stopping point . It is located on the Pfronten-Ried- Reutte section of the Ausserfernbahn , which opened on December 16, 1905, and is the last station on the German side before the line crosses the Austrian border to the next station, Vils Stadt.

There is only one siding next to the main track. There is a side platform on the station side and for the siding there is a side platform between the tracks, which can be reached at the same height. There used to be a loading platform (platform 1) right next to the station building and the goods shed. The signal systems are controlled by an electronic signal box in Durach .

traffic

The station is only served by passenger traffic. Pfronten-Steinach is the end point of the two-hour regional trains (RB) from Kempten (Allgäu) Hbf to Pfronten-Steinach, with trains running to Reutte in Tyrol in between. Passport and border controls used to take place in Pfronten-Steinach. There was a customs office at the station for this purpose. As a result of the Schengen Agreement , the controls were discontinued in 1998.

future

The Reutte – Pfronten-Steinach line will be electrified by the end of 2021. The Free State is voluntarily funding the cross-border rail project with 55,000 euros. The planning is done by ÖBB. After completion, the trains from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Pfronten-Steinach will run every hour, so that the switch to the diesel multiple units in the direction of Kempten will take place in Pfronten-Steinach in future.

Furthermore, the station is to be made barrier-free. A connection-free connection from Munich via Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Reutte in Tyrol to Pfronten-Steinach is planned.

tourism

The station is used by tourists to, with the Breitenbergbahn whose valley station is located opposite the train station on the Breitenberg to arrive. In addition, the train station is a suitable starting point for hikes and tours on the Falkenstein with the Falkenstein Castle or along the Vils . The exhibition of the model railway enthusiasts Pfronten is located in the former customs rooms .
