The Laaer Ostbahn , formerly Ostbahn (northern line) , is a partially double-track, electrified main line in Austria , which is now operated by the Austrian Federal Railways . It leads from Vienna north to Laa an der Thaya and runs through the Weinviertel .

history

The line was designed by the kk privileged Austro-Hungarian State Railroad Company (StEG) as part of a continuous main line from Vienna via Brno and Prague to Bodenbach . It was opened on November 24, 1870. The route, which was planned to consist of two tracks throughout, was, however, only expanded to two-track as far as Gerasdorf ; the rest of the route was designed as a single-track on a double-track substructure. The route ran from Vienna Ostbahnhof via Wolkersdorf , Mistelbach , Laa an der Thaya to Grußbach in Moravia and then via Mährisch-Kromau to Brno . In 1909 the kk Staatsbahnen (kkStB) took over the StEG.

After 1945 the line was interrupted at the state border between Laa an der Thaya and Hevlín ( Höflein ). After the fall of the Iron Curtain, closing the gap was repeatedly requested by both sides, but has not yet been implemented. Since 1983, the S2 line of the Vienna S-Bahn has served the Gerasdorf – Mistelbach route. For this purpose, two loops were built in the Süßenbrunn area from the Northern Railway to the Laaer Ostbahn. The section Vienna Südbahnhof - Vienna Erzherzog-Karl-Straße is now covered by the S80 line.

In 2005 the line between Gerasdorf and Wolkersdorf was expanded to two tracks and a quarter-hour cycle was set up between Vienna and Wolkersdorf during rush hour. In addition, the section Vienna Südbahnhof - Wien-Breitenleer-Straße was reinforced by the newly created S8 S-Bahn line. After the electrification of the Mistelbach – Laa an der Thaya line in 2006, the S-Bahn was extended to Laa. Since then, the entire Vienna – Laa route has been electrified and equipped with continuous track switching. A double-track expansion of the Mistelbach – Mistelbach Stadt line is planned. After its completion should all trains from Vienna that were previously in the station Mistelbach ended until Mistelbach city be extended. In Obersdorf you can also change to the local railway to Groß-Schweinbarth , the only branch line of the Laaer Ostbahn still in operation. Passenger traffic on this was discontinued on December 15, 2019.

On December 12, 2010, the Vienna Breitenleer Straße stop (originally: Breitenlee; later: Breitenlee-Kagran; then: Kagran; then: Kagran ÖBB to differentiate it from Kagran U1) was closed.

ETCS Level 2 has been active between Vienna Hbf and Gerasdorf since October 20, 2014 . With the timetable change at the end of December 2014, the Vienna Lobau station was closed.

passenger traffic

On the Laaer Ostbahn, according to the timetable that came into force on December 9, 2012, you can travel from Wiener Neustadt Hauptbahnhof via the Südbahn and the S-Bahn main line (with the Wien Hauptbahnhof stop , platforms 1 and 2, underground and the train station Vienna Floridsdorf ) Trains on line S2 to Mistelbach and Laa an der Thaya and back. There is currently no local public transport on the innermost branch of the Laaer Ostbahn from Vienna Erzherzog-Karl-Straße to Gerasdorf , long-distance trains run between Vienna Central Station and Süßenbrunn in the direction of Břeclav and on to Poland, the Czech Republic and Germany, which also stopped in Simmering until December 2014 .

Closing the gap to the Czech Republic

Since the end of the Second World War (1945), there has been no connection between the end of the line immediately north of the Laa train station and the end of the Hevlin-Hrušovany branch line of the Hevlín-Brno line. The missing two kilometers of the route, which also include a bridge over the Thaya , were not restored even after the fall of the Iron Curtain.

From the political side there has always been relatively little interest in reactivating the connection, since both Austria and the Czech Republic attach little importance to a continuous railway line. Local politicians from Laa in 2007 were of a different opinion, hoping that this would revitalize Therme Laa. The Jungbunzlauer Austria AG , for a rail connection to the northern neighbor "would be very important," spoke out according to a newspaper report for the gap closure.
