history

Ostbahnbrücke and footbridge at the Ostbahnbrücke (2014)

1870-1939

In 1870 the Duisburg company built Harkort under the direction of Johann Caspar Harkort VI. (1817–1896) the bridge designed by Anton Battig and August Köstlin . It was built as a double - track truss bridge.

1939-1945

In 1939 the Ostbahnbrücke was rebuilt by the National Socialist rulers in order to adapt it to the increased load caused by the higher freight weight. The coming war with its increased freight volume due to the supply transports probably also played a role. In April 1945 it was blown up during the Battle of Vienna .

1946– today

The Ostbahnbrücke was rebuilt in 1946. It is not known whether the narrow " footbridge on the Ostbahnbrücke " on the Ostbahn already existed earlier. In the monographCrossings - Bridges-City-Vienna ” it is listed as an independent bridge (object number 0207 0), which is under the supervision of Municipal Department 29 (Bridge Construction - Foundation Construction).
