The Uferbahnbrücke is a railway bridge on the Donauuferbahn . It crosses the Danube Canal in Vienna and connects the districts of Döbling and Brigittenau .

location

The Uferbahnbrücke is located near the Nussdorf weir , the Nussdorf lock and the Nussdorf train station of the Franz-Josefs-Bahn .

history

1878 to 1945

After the opening of the Donauuferbahn on October 26, 1876 between the Stadlauer Ostbahnbrücke and the Donaukaibahnhof, disputes arose which delayed the further development of the line to the north. Therefore, the extension of the 5-kilometer route to Nussdorf was not put into operation until August 24, 1878. The route constructed by the construction company Redlich & Berger also included the Uferbahnbrücke , which crossed the Danube Canal at an angle of 40 °. These were three separate single-track structures, of which the middle was an arch bridge with a 55.4 meter opening. The opening of the two side parts was 15.65 meters each.

In 1943 a second structure was built next to the bridge, but all of these bridges were destroyed in World War II. Because of the difficult conditions, the Red Army only temporarily repaired the bridge located a short distance to the south , so that the trains did not have to make a long detour via Heiligenstadt .

1949 until today

In 1949 it was decided to rebuild the bridge. The topping-out ceremony was held on December 1, 1949, at the railroader's home in Vienna's 5th district . On an invitation that has been preserved, this 850-ton steel structure built by Wiener Brückenbau und Eisenkonstruktions AG is referred to as the " Nussdorf Bridge ". The conversion of the pillars determined by the company Mayreder, Kraus & Co . The old pillars and abutments could be used, the layout of which can still be seen today for two tracks. The new single-track bridge has a span of 92 meters and an arch height of 10 meters. In February 1950 operations could be resumed.
