Rossauer bridge with Rossauer barracks

The Rossauer Bridge (until 1999 officially: Roß ...) crosses the Danube Canal in Vienna as one of the newest road bridges and connects the districts 2, Leopoldstadt , and 9, Alsergrund .

location

The Rossauer Bridge connects Rembrandtstrasse in the 2nd district and Türkenstrasse in the 9th district to form a continuous street that can be used in one-way traffic towards the 9th district. (It is the counterpart to the street Maria-Theresien- Straße - Augartenbrücke - Lower Augartenstraße, which can be driven in the direction of the 2nd district .) At the bridgeheads, the streets accompanying the Danube Canal are Obere Donaustraße (2nd district, one-way north) and Rossauer Lände (9th floor) . District, one-way south) connected. Before this bridge was built, there was no bridge connection here.

At the corner of Rossauer Lände / Türkenstrasse you will find the Rossauer barracks on the south side and the former building of the pension insurance institution for workers on the north side . The bridge is not used by public transport. Below it, in the 9th district, between the underground stations Rossauer Lände north and Schottenring south of the bridge, the Danube Canal runs along the underground line U4 at the level of the Vorkais.

history

Structure of the Rossauer bridge

The Rossauer bridge became necessary after the two Danube Canal roads, here Obere Donaustraße and Rossauer Lände, were converted to one-way traffic due to the high volume of traffic. Before the bridge was built, the Rossauer Lände directly in front of the Rossauer Kaserne had to be driven in both directions, so that the Türkenstraße as a connection to the 9th district and to the two-way line from the 2nd district could be reached via the Augarten Bridge, which at that time was also accessible in both directions could. With the construction of the bridge, this bottleneck in the Rossauer Lände in front of the barracks disappeared, and the Augarten Bridge could now also be converted to one-way traffic (except for tram traffic).

During the tenure of Mayor Leopold Gratz, the bridge was built as a prestressed concrete bridge by order of the Vienna City Building Office 1981–1983 according to plans by the engineering office Alfred Pauser by a consortium consisting of Porr and Universale Bau GmbH . It stands at a slight angle to the Danube Canal and is built in a slight arch. The 26.4 meter long middle section was built using prefabricated parts .

The bridge was named after the former suburb of Rossau in the 9th district ; the part of the name “au” indicates that centuries ago, in addition to the Danube Canal as a historical branch of the Danube, there were other river branches between which there was originally a floodplain landscape that was repeatedly flooded.

The most striking feature of the 91.39-meter-long and 26-meter-wide bridge is the column construction, in which four piers in the form of an upside-down pyramid strut apart and support the structure.
