The subway line U4 of the Vienna subway serves 20 stations over a distance of 16.5 kilometers and connects the district part of Hütteldorf of the 14th Viennese district in the west of Vienna via the city center with Heiligenstadt , a district part of the 19th district of Vienna, Döbling , in the north of the city. Their signal color is green.

The U4, which opened in 1976, is the oldest of Vienna's five underground lines. Large parts of its infrastructure come from the much older Vienna Stadtbahn from 1898 or the Viennese Electric Stadtbahn from 1925 that emerged from it. This applies in particular to the station buildings designed by Otto Wagner .

The U4 starts at Wien Hütteldorf station ; whereby the Vienna subway name is omitted from stations used jointly with the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). This is located on the Westbahn and is served by S-Bahn , regional and REX trains.

The U4 systems are parallel to the tracks of the Westbahn with a turning system and are separated from them by a chain-link fence . Until 1925 there were track connections between the Stadtbahn and the Western Railway. From the ticket hall of the Wien Hütteldorf train station, passengers go through a tunnel to the platforms of the Westbahn and the U4, which, when viewed from the Wien River , are in an elevated position, when viewed from Hütteldorf they are at ground level.

From here the U4 runs past a newly built park-and-ride car park, crosses Hadikgasse and the bed of the Wien River at an angle, and then runs on a short section in an elevated position on ten so-called light rail arches , which are otherwise mainly in the area of ​​the belt line (today U6), the suburban line (today S45) and the largely disused connecting arch exist. It then leads downhill into the incision in the 13th district on the right bank that runs parallel to the Wien River. Then it reaches the first station, Ober St. Veit, with a well-preserved reception building in the Otto Wagner style , already at a low altitude .

The route continues at a low altitude along the Hietzinger Kai and the Wien River. In front of the Hietzing station under the Kennedy Bridge , a traffic junction, there is a siding between the directional tracks and the courtyard pavilion at the end of the platform on the city side . The area between Hütteldorf and Hietzing was equipped with new tracks and switches in summer 2016, which means that disruptions can be avoided better.

In front of the main entrance to Schönbrunn Palace, the U4 passes under the palace bridge . From the following Schönbrunn underground station to Karlsplatz (1st / 4th district), it is mostly accompanied by the Rechte Wienzeile (12th, 5th and 4th district), which is now the main entrance to Vienna in sections of the A1 western motorway . Across the river, the counterpart is the Linke Wienzeile.

Up until 1985, the Meidling Hauptstrasse station (12th district) was the junction to the belt line of the light rail. With its successor, the U6 , the U4 is connected to the next station, Längenfeldgasse , with two central platforms on the same level. The connecting track between U4 and U6 is only accessible for maintenance vehicles, as the two routes use different power supply systems.

Then the route goes under the Margaret Belt . The route is again led in the open cut until it disappears again in an arch under a tunnel ceiling in front of the Naschmarkt (5th / 4th district); this was built around 1900 together with the 2.1 kilometer long vault of the Wien river up to the city ​​park .

After passing under Operngasse , the U4 passes under Karlsplatz (traffic junction on the edge of the city center, U1, U2). The U4 platforms there are right next to the easily recognizable walls of the vaulted Vienna River. Although the station is located in the vaulted section of the Wien River, the platform area was not vaulted until the conversion to underground service in the 1970s, since the Stadtbahn initially operated with steam; The light rail pavilions , which are now a listed building, served as exits to the platforms .

To the east of Karlsplatz, the U4, like the Wienfluss, runs under Lothringerstraße and Schwarzenbergplatz (1st / 3rd / 4th district) and comes out again briefly after Johannesgasse in the platform area of ​​the Stadtpark station . The U4 then leads again into a tunnel and arrives at the Landstrasse station (Wien Mitte) , an underground local transport hub in the 3rd district of Vienna, Landstrasse, the aboveground buildings of which have been completely rebuilt. Here the U4 crosses the lower U3, which was built 90 years later . From 1899 to 1925 there was also a track connection to the connecting railway here.

Then the U4 crosses the Wien River from tunnel to tunnel on the Zollamtsbrücke , which runs diagonally to the river, under the Zollamtssteg in 1./3. District. From the short section of the tunnel under Julius-Raab-Platz, an operating track branches off to the U3. This is followed by a gallery stretch along the Danube Canal . At the Schwedenplatz station (1st district) the U4 crosses the lower-lying route of the U1, which was built here 80 years later, and the lower-lying U2 at the Schottenring station (which until 2008 had its terminus here on the same level as the U4). The gallery section ends at the Friedensbrücke station (9th district; previously the junction to the belt line of the light rail); Now the U4 runs for a while under the open sky, then again in a tunnel next to the Nordbergbrücke.

The Spittelau station , in front of which the U4 left the bank of the Danube Canal, is located parallel to the tracks of the Franz-Josefs-Bahn , above which the U6 has crossed in an elevated position since 1996. The last section of the line is followed by the U4 to Vienna Heiligenstadt station (19th district); Here, too, there were links between the light rail and long-distance trains until 1925. Like the Wien Hütteldorf railway station, this regional transfer hub is used by the Austrian Federal Railways and Wiener Linien . For the U4 there is an automatic system for driverless turning.

In 1968 the Vienna City Council decided to build the basic network of the Vienna subway. This should also contain the Untere Wientallinie , the Obere Wientallinie and the Donaukanallinie of the Stadtbahn, on which the U4 should run instead of the WD line. The federal government had guaranteed co-financing with 50 percent of the construction costs; Wiener Stadtwerke - Verkehrsbetriebe, would run the operation at the risk of the city administration.

In the decision to build a basic network for the Vienna underground, both new lines and the conversion of the previous Wiental and Danube canal lines of the light rail to the underground were planned. Lower line numbers were assigned to the new lines to be built, such as the U1 . Number 3 was reserved in the 1960s for the U3 , which was firmly decided but only started in 1983 . In this system of four base lines, the U4 received the highest line number for the time being. However, when it opened in 1976, it initially still had the identification color purple, while its later identification color green was still assigned to the deleted light rail line G on the route network maps at that time . It was not until 1977 that those responsible decided on green as the new color for the U4, whereupon the deleted light rail line G was given the color brown as an alternative. In addition, the U4 ran in the first two years of operation without the suffix U, i.e. as line 4.

Links with the U6

As part of the second expansion stage , the line was expanded to include two stations. With the conversion of the belt line of the Stadtbahn to underground operation and the simultaneous extension of the resulting U6 line beyond the U4, the Längenfeldgasse underground station was opened in 1989 as a new connecting station for the two lines. A new line intersection for the U6 and U4 lines was also built for the northern continuation of the Belt Line, namely the Spittelau underground station , which opened in 1995 .

Modernization - Project NEW4

In spring 2014, Wiener Linien and the City of Vienna started this modernization project to renew the old infrastructure, the historic station structures by Otto Wagner and to improve operational reliability. A total of 335 million euros are to be invested by 2024 in order, for example, to replace signal boxes, renew tracks and track underground, and renovate stations and tunnels. Furthermore, more track connections are to be built on the line. During the first construction phases, sections of the route were temporarily closed and individual platforms were partially closed.

The Pilgramgasse underground station was completely demolished and rebuilt in the course of the redesign to a line intersection with the U2, except for the old Otto Wagner structures. For this purpose, it was closed between February 3, 2019 and January 30, 2020, the traffic was guided through the station on a single track without stopping.
