Customs footbridge

The Zollamtssteg and the underlying Zollamt bridge over the River Wien , fall protection is carried out by the typical rail railing

The Zollamtssteg - a bridge for pedestrians and cyclists - crosses the Wien River in Vienna just before its confluence with the Danube Canal and connects the districts of Landstrasse and Inner City .

location

The footbridge connects Schallautzerstrasse at the back of the former War Ministry (the footbridge runs towards the center of the building) in the 1st district with Vorderen Zollamtsstrasse in the 3rd district, where the Vienna Main Customs Office was located. Directly below the footbridge, the U4 subway line crosses the Wien River on the Zollamtsbrücke , it was built at the same time as the Zollamtssteg and originally served the Vienna steam light rail and, from 1925, the Vienna electric light rail .

history

Zollamtssteg, view towards Vordere Zollamtsstraße

A wooden walkway had been at this point since 1868. As part of the regulation of the Wien River and the construction of the light rail, the steel footbridge was constructed here in 1900 by Martin Paul . The architectural design comes from Josef Hackhofer and Friedrich Ohmann , Anton Biró was responsible for the steel construction . At the same time, the Zollamtsbrücke (customs office bridge) below was built for the light railroad at that time, based on designs by Otto Wagner . The two bridge structures were named after the Vienna main customs office , which the footbridge connected with the city center. The main customs office was almost completely destroyed in World War II and then demolished.

From July to December 2008, the listed Zollamtssteg was renovated on behalf of Municipal Department 29 (Vienna Bridge Construction and Foundation Construction). An asphalt surface now replaces the wooden planks, and instead of the previous stairs, the bridge was given barrier-free, level access via ramps.

The arch of the arch bridge extends far below the level of the sidewalk, so that the subway, which crosses the Wien river in an inclined direction - coming from a tunnel from both sides - creates the impression of a gate passage.

The Zollamtssteg served the movie Before Sunrise by Richard Linklater and the episode threatening letters of the crime television series Kottan determined as one of the locations.
