The Schwedenplatz is a three-storey underground station in the 1st District of Vienna , Inner City . Lines U1 and U4 meet here. The U4 facilities have a central platform and are located in a gallery along the Franz-Josefs-Kai or the Danube Canal . The platforms of the U1 extend as side platforms in two parallel tubes at an angle from the exit of Rotenturmstraße to the Schwedenbrücke over the Danube Canal. Exits lead by escalators to Schwedenplatz (Laurenzerberg exit, possibility to change to tram or Rotenturmstraße exit between Hafnersteig and Rotenturmstraße, possibility to change to line 2A and the Vienna Airport Lines) and via fixed stairs in the direction of Urania .

history

The station, designed by Otto Wagner on behalf of the Commission for Transport Systems in Vienna , was completed in September 1900 and opened on August 6, 1901 under the name Ferdinandsbrücke as part of the Vienna Steam City Railway, which, however, completely stopped operating the Danube Canal line on December 8, 1918 due to the war had to adjust. After Ferdinandsplatz and Ferdinandsbrücke were renamed Schwedenplatz and Schwedenbrücke on November 6, 1919 , this also applied to the stop itself from their reopening as part of the Vienna Electric Light Rail on October 20, 1925, whereby from now on it was no longer the bridge but the Place was eponymous. The company abbreviation changed from FB to SP.

Following the gradual conversion of the Danube Canal line to an underground line, Schwedenplatz station has been served by the U4 since August 15, 1978. On November 24, 1979, the U1 section between Stephansplatz and Nestroyplatz was handed over to its destination, completing today's subway junction. Otto Wagner's conception can hardly be imagined on the platforms of the U4; these were completely redesigned according to the panel design of the U-Bahn group of architects . The construction of the U1 systems turned out to be a challenge for civil engineers due to the undercutting of buildings in the area of the Greeks Lane and, above all, the crossing under the Danube Canal. On July 9, 1974, groundwater broke in the construction site under Schwedenplatz.
