Departure to the station in Rotensterngasse

The Nestroyplatz station on the U1 line opened in 1979. It is located in a low-lying area directly below Praterstrasse in Vienna's 2nd district, Leopoldstadt . Named is Nestroyplatz after the playwright and actor since 1932 Johann Nestroy . He often appeared in his plays at the nearby Carltheater , which was used during World War IIwas destroyed. Near the station - in front of house numbers 17-19, Zum Jonas - there is a Johann Nestroy memorial cast in 1929, which was erected here after the underground work was completed in 1983, but previously stood between the Carltheater and Nestroyhof . The station has a central platform and extends between Komödiengasse and Rotensterngasse. Exits lead to Praterstrasse, Komödiengasse and Weintraubengasse by means of fixed stairs and escalators. In the 2000s, the station was converted to be barrier-free: an elevator leads directly from the platform to a traffic island on Praterstrasse. Next to one of the three stairways to Nestroyplatz is the Tempelgasse with a remnant of the Leopoldstadt Temple , which was destroyed during the November pogrom in 1938 , today a memorial made of four white columns commemorates it.

The Nestroyplatz station was opened on November 24, 1979, making it possible to travel on another section of the U1 from Stephansplatz via Schwedenplatz to the 2nd district. In 1978 the sections from Reumannplatz to Karlsplatz and from Karlsplatz to Stephansplatz were opened. Until February 28, 1981, the Nestroyplatz station remained the northern terminus of the U1 line.

Building history

The Nestroyplatz station was built using the cut-and-cover method, while for the connection from Schwedenplatz to Nestroyplatz below the Danube Canal, the tunnel boring machine known at the time as the “Wiener Mole” was used for the last time. On May 26, 1977, after the completion of the tunnel to Nestroyplatz, this tunnel boring machine, which was suitable for driving in loose sediment with gravel and lots of water, was put out of operation. The "New Austrian Tunneling Method" was used for later underground tunnel construction. It wasn't until 26 years later that a similar shield drilling machine was used when the U1 was extended.

The open construction of the station meant that the ring tram lines A, A k , B and B k , which were running in Praterstraße at the time, had to be relocated to the edge of Praterstraße. The station is located directly under the current Praterstrasse road. Because of the depth of the underground line, which crosses under the Danube Canal shortly before the station, the station has two storeys.

Effects

The Galaxy Tower right next to a stairway to the U1 station

The opening of the subway station did not initially have the hoped-for stimulating effects on business life on Praterstrasse, which, according to the city planners, would become a “shopping boulevard” after the subway was completed.

The first building to be newly constructed in anticipation of the subway connection was the Galaxie skyscraper built in 1975 on the site of the demolished Carltheater by the architect Josef Becvar , who also designed the Hotel Europa in front of Salzburg's main train station . After its completion, this office tower remained almost empty for many years, even after the opening of the U1 station, until the newsrooms and sales department of the News publishing group moved into it in the early 1990s . After the publishing house moved to the nearby Media Tower, in 2001 and 2002 the building was increased from 15 to 21 floors and renamed Galaxy 21 according to plans by the architect Martin Kohlbauer . The vestibule now extends almost to the subway entrance in Komödiengasse. Today the building houses a branch of the World Bank , the Federal Competition Authority and the Federal Procurement Office.

Another new building was built on the corner of Praterstrasse and Aspernbrückengasse. In place of the former official building with the tax office for the 2nd and 20th district, an office building was also built, which is now the headquarters of the ATV television station with studio and production rooms. The tax offices between the Danube Canal and the Danube were merged with those on the other side of the Danube and are now located in a new building in front of the Kagran station on the U1.
