Nestroyplatz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nestroyplatz is a place in the second district of Vienna Leopoldstadt . It was named in 1932 after the Austrian writer and comedian Johann Nestroy . Before that, the area was named Czerningasse and Tempelgasse , as the two streets meet at this point with Praterstrasse .

history

At the height of today's Nestroyplatz was the Leopoldstädter Theater between 1781 and 1847 - one of the most important Viennese people's theaters and the place where the “Wiener Kasperls ” worked. Ferdinand Raimund , Luise Gleich and Therese Krones performed there. The extremely popular actress Krones died at the age of twenty-nine after she had given help during the big ice rush on February 28, 1830. The theater director Karl von Bernbrunn , with the stage name Carl Carl, acquired the famous Volksbühne, for which he was commissioned in 1847 by the opera architects Eduard van der Nüll and August Sicard von Sicardsburghad a new building built. As a result, he continued the stage as the Carl Theater . From 1854 to 1860 the theater was directed by Johann Nestroy. It was closed in 1929 and after its destruction in World War II - it was hit by bombs in 1944 - it was demolished in 1951. The Nestroy monument created in 1929, which was moved from Nestroyplatz to the Reinhardt Seminar in Penzing after the Second World War , returned to Leopoldstadt in 1983 and is now in front of the house on Praterstrasse 17.

The Nestroyplatz underground station opened on November 24, 1979. This direct underground connection to the north and south of Vienna with simultaneous proximity to the city center and the extensive green areas of the Vienna Prater make Nestroyplatz extremely conveniently located. In addition, buses 5A and 7A and the Vienna night bus connect Nestroyplatz with the surrounding outskirts.

Surroundings

Nestroyplatz is right on Praterstrasse. Today's Praterstrasse was created around 1560 when Emperor Maximilian II , an enthusiastic hunter, declared the Prater to be an imperial forest and hunting ground. He made the building site between Schwedenbrücke and Prater available to his hunting and forest assistants and had houses built for them along a straight line. This gave the street its first name: Jägerzeile . During the Biedermeier period and on the occasion of the 1873 World's Fair , the Jägerzeile - with the support of the wealthy Jewish bourgeoisie - was expanded into a sophisticated and elegant boulevard and was considered one of the most beautiful Viennese boulevards. The noble and rich, but also actors, artists, writers and intellectuals liked to be seen in the local coffee houses and establishments.

Almost 100 years after the Prater was opened to the general public, it was given its current name in 1862: Praterstraße. A prominent resident of Praterstrasse was Johann Strauss (son) . Dr. Karl Renner , the two-time founder of the republic, Federal President and State Chancellor, was a resident of Praterstrasse until 1934. The Viennese theater scene resided here almost completely, starting with the actor and playwright Ferdinand Raimund, through Johann Nestroy, theater poet, lawyer, singer and actor to the probably most famous popular actress of her time, Josefine Gallmeyer .

Max Steiner's birthplace: The Hotel Nordbahn (Hotel Vienna since 2008), Praterstrasse 72

Over the years, many other scientists, artists and doctors also lived in Praterstrasse. The pioneer of film music, Max Steiner , for example, was born at number 72 in the Hotel Nordbahn (today Austria Classic Hotel Wien ) and worked in the Volksprater before moving to Broadway and Hollywood . He wrote music for over 300 films, including "Casablanca", " Gone with the Wind ", " King Kong " and " The Treasure of the Sierra Madre ".

Right in the next block, at number 70, is the Doge's court in Venetian style, which imitates the Ca 'd'Oro on the Grand Canal in Venice ; at that time there were plans to build an Italian quarter in Vienna.

The ordination of Alfred Adler , the founder of individual psychology , was at number 44, and the former Carltheater at number 31 , where Johann Nestroy was director and many of his plays were performed (a statue is in front of house number 19). Finally, at number 22, there is the simple room in which Elias Canetti , winner of the 1981 Nobel Prize for Literature, lived during his school days. The playwright and novelist Arthur Schnitzler was born at number 16 , whose “ Dream Novella ”, set in Vienna around 1900, served as the template for Stanley Kubrick's last film, “ Eyes Wide Shut ” with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman .
