Local government ( Mairie ) of Échenevex

Échenevex is a French commune with 2,132 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Thoiry in the Gex arrondissement and is a member of the Pays de Gex municipal association .

geography

Échenevex is located at 590  m , three kilometers southwest of Gex and about 15 kilometers northwest of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The former farming village extends in the Pays de Gex at a promising elevated position at the foot of the Jura below the Colomby de Gex , on the northern edge of the Geneva basin.

The area of the 16.44 km² municipal area covers a section of the Pays de Gex. The area is divided into two naturally very different parts. The south-eastern part is occupied by the fertile plain at the foot of the Jura and extends to the course of the Journans (in the Allondon catchment area). From the plain, the slope climbs gently to the Échenevex plateau ( 600  m on average ). This plateau is drained by the Varfeuille to the Journans. The western boundary is the Allondon valley cut , which rises with a karst spring at the foot of the Jura.

To the west, the community area extends over the steep, densely wooded slope to the broad ridge of the foremost Jura chain. This ridge is divided into the two main peaks of the Colomby de Gex (with 1680 and 1688  m the highest peaks of the Jura) and the Montchanais to the east ( 1446  m ). There are extensive mountain pastures above around 1400  m . The pastures to the west of the main ridge also belong to Échenevex, the western border runs along the steep drop to the Valserine valley . The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

In addition to the original location, Échenevex also includes various hamlets and new housing developments, namely:

  • Chenaz ( 501  m ) in the plain west of the Journans
  • Mury ( 555  m ) on the Échenevex plateau
  • La Pierre ( 614  m ) at the foot of the Jura above the village
  • Naz-Dessus ( 609  m ) at the foot of the Jura near the source of the Allondon

Neighboring municipalities of Échenevex are Gex in the north, Cessy and Ségny in the east, Chevry and Crozet in the south and Mijoux in the west.

history

Échenevex is first mentioned in 1390 under the name Eschenevay . Over time, the spelling changed via Exchenevay , Eychenevay (1497), Exchenevex (1528), Echenevai (1730) and Eschenevex (1744) to the current name. The place name is made up of the components ex (from) and chenevay , an old French expression for the hemp plant (Latin cannabis ).

Since the Middle Ages , Échenevex belonged to the Lords of Gex. Along with this rule, the village came under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy in the 14th century . Then Échenevex shared the checkered history of the Pays de Gex , with which it finally came to France after the conclusion of the Treaty of Lyon in 1601 (less credible) guarantee of the Reformed faith adopted during the Bernese rule. The village has always belonged to the parish of Cessy and therefore does not have its own church. It was not until 1833 that Échenevex was politically separated from Cessy and raised to an independent municipality.

With 2132 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Échenevex is one of the smaller municipalities in the Ain department. The population has grown significantly since the mid-1960s. Particularly strong growth rates were registered during the 1970s and 1980s. During this time, the population has more than tripled. Numerous new single-family houses were built outside the old town center. The local residents of Échenevex are called Chenevessien (ne) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Échenevex was predominantly an agricultural village. Today there are some local small businesses. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns of the Pays de Gex or as cross-border commuters in the agglomeration of Geneva. South of Échenevex there is a golf course (Golf de Maison Blanche).

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located above the D984c, which leads from Saint-Genis-Pouilly to Gex. Further road connections exist with Crozet, Cessy and Segny. The closest connection to the Swiss A1 motorway is around twelve kilometers away. The former railway line , which led from Bellegarde-sur-Valserine to Divonne-les-Bains and also served Échenevex, was closed. A bus line operates in their place today.

There is a state école primaire (elementary school with an integrated preschool ) in Échenevex .
