Thoiry is a French commune in the Ain department in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Thoiry is located 496  m above sea level, about 14 kilometers west-northwest of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The former farming village extends in the Pays de Gex at a promising elevated position at the foot of the Jura below the Crêt de la Neige , at the source of the Allemogne, on the northwestern edge of the Geneva basin near the state border with Switzerland .

The area of the 28.93 km² municipal area covers a section of the Pays de Gex. The area is divided into two naturally very different parts. The south-eastern part is occupied by the fertile plain at the foot of the Jura, with the eastern border running along the Allondon . This flows with several turns in a valley that is slightly sunk into the deposits of the Ice Age Rhone glacier . From the right it takes up the Allemogne , which rises with a karst spring at the foot of the Jura near Thoiry. From the course of the river, the municipal ban extends west to the plateau of the Pays de Gex, which rises gently towards the Jura. The southern boundary forms the valley section of the Ruisseau de Fénières .

Cross on the Reculet

To the west, the community area extends over the steep, densely wooded slope to the broad ridge of the foremost Jura chain. The slope is subdivided by various erosion channels, but the actual flowing waters only arise at the foot of the Jura. In the municipality of Thoiry are the Crêt de la Neige ( 1720  m ) and the Reculet ( 1717  m ), the two highest peaks of the Jura Mountains. Above around 1500 m there are extensive mountain pastures, which, however, are also interspersed with typical karst features such as sinkholes and impassable cart fields . The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

In addition to the original location, Thoiry also includes various villages, hamlets and new housing developments, namely:

  • Allemogne ( 502  m ) at the foot of the Crêt de la Neige at the source of the Allemogne
  • Baizenas ( 488  m ) at the foot of the Jura
  • Fénières ( 504  m ) at the foot of the Reculet

Neighboring municipalities of Thoiry are Saint-Jean-de-Gonville in the south, Chézery-Forens in the west, Lélex and Sergy in the north, Saint-Genis-Pouilly in the east and the Swiss municipalities of Satigny and Dardagny in the southeast.

history

Saint-Maurice Church of Thoiry

The municipality of Thoiry was settled very early. Finds from the Neolithic were discovered as well as numerous objects (tools, ceramics, bricks), which suggest a Roman settlement. At that time a quarry was also being exploited.

Thoiry is first mentioned in 1301 under the name Thoyrie . Over time, the spelling changed via Thoyriacum (1337), Thoyrier (1397), Thoyriez (1528), Toiry (1670) and Toirier (18th century) to the current name. The place name goes back to the Gallo-Roman surname Torius and means something like Torius' estate (Toriacum).

Since the Middle Ages , Thoiry formed its own small rule. In the 14th century the village came under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy . Then Thoiry shared the checkered history of the Pays de Gex , with which it finally came to France after the conclusion of the Treaty of Lyon in 1601. The village was always on the traffic route from Bellegarde along the foot of the Jura to Geneva, until this trade route was moved further out into the plain around 1750.

On November 17, 1926, a Franco-German reconciliation meeting between Aristide Briand and Gustav Stresemann took place in Thoiry .

Attractions

The parish church of Saint-Maurice was rebuilt around 1830 in the style of neoclassicism . It stands on the site of a church that probably dates back to the 9th century. In Allemogne there is a chapel and a former manor house.

With 6,038 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Thoiry is one of the medium-sized communities in the Ain department. The population has grown significantly since the mid-1960s. Particularly strong growth rates were registered during the 1980s and 1990s. During this time the population of Thoiry has doubled. Numerous new single-family houses were built outside the old town center.

Parish partnership

A partnership with the German municipality of Pfronten has existed since 2002 .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Thoiry was a predominantly agricultural village. Today there are some small and medium-sized businesses. Since the 1970s, a commercial and industrial area has developed southeast of the village near the main road. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work as cross-border commuters in the Geneva agglomeration.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a connecting road that leads from Saint-Jean-de-Gonville along the foot of the Jura to Crozet . The main road D984, which is now a four-lane expressway, bypasses Thoiry in the southeast. There are other road connections with Sergy and Saint-Genis-Pouilly. The closest connection to the Swiss A1 motorway is around 10 km away. The former railway line , which led from Bellegarde-sur-Valserine to Divonne-les-Bains and also served Thoiry, was closed. A bus line operates in their place today.
