Sauverny is a French commune with 1,009 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Gex in the Gex arrondissement and is a member of the Pays de Gex community association .
geography
Sauverny is located at 485 m , five kilometers southeast of Gex and about 13 kilometers north of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The former farming village extends in the Pays de Gex in a promising location on a slope slightly to the south, south of Mont Mourex ( height in front of the Jura ), on the northern edge of the Geneva Basin, near the state border with Switzerland .
The area of the 1.89 km² municipal area covers a section of the Pays de Gex. The eastern border runs along the Versoix , which drains the area to Lake Geneva . The brook flows with several meanders through a wide valley and takes in the Oudar from the right . From the floodplain, the community area extends westward over the slope of Sauverny to the adjacent plateau and into a moorland in which the Étang de Cessy is located. The highest point of Sauverny is reached on the plateau at 521 m .
Part of the new housing estate Les Genévriers ( 475 m ) southwest of the village belongs to Sauverny . The neighboring communities of Sauverny are Versonnex in the south and west, Cessy and Grilly in the north and the Swiss community Versoix in the east.
history
Sauverny is mentioned for the first time in 1164 under the name Soverney . Over time, the spelling changed from villa de Soverniaco (1225), Sauvernier (1317), Souvernier (1319), Sovernie (1332), Sovernier (1371) and Sauvergnier (1730) to the current name Sauverny, which was first documented in 1734 is. The etymology of the place name is not clear. While some sources see the derivation from the Gallo-Roman personal name Sovernius , others propagate the origin of the word combination sous vernaie (meaning below the alder grove ).
In the Middle Ages Sauverny belonged to the Lords of Gex as a fief. Along with this rule, the village came to the Counts of Savoy in the 14th century. Sauverny then shared the checkered history of the Pays de Gex , with which it finally came to France after the conclusion of the Treaty of Lyon in 1601.
Attractions
The parish church of Saint-Maurice was rebuilt in 1848 on the site of a previous church.

With 1009 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Sauverny is one of the smaller communities in the Ain department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century, the population has continued to grow steadily since the early 1960s. Particularly strong growth rates were registered from 1975 to 1990. During this time, the population quintupled. Numerous new single-family houses were built outside the old town center. The local residents of Sauverny are called Sauvernien (ne) s in French .
Economy and Infrastructure
Sauverny was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . Today there are some small and medium-sized businesses. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns of the Pays de Gex or as cross-border commuters in the agglomeration of Geneva.
The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the D15 departmental road from Ferney-Voltaire to Divonne-les-Bains . Other road connections exist with Cessy and the Swiss Versoix. The closest connection to the Swiss A1 motorway is around ten kilometers away.
In Sauverny there is a state école primaire (elementary school with an integrated preschool ).
