Ferney-Voltaire (also Fernex , later Ferney ) is a French commune with 9,766 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ain department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region . It is part of the Gex arrondissement , the canton of Saint-Genis-Pouilly and the Pays de Gex municipal association .

geography

Ferney is only four kilometers from Lake Geneva and is right next to Geneva's Cointrin Airport . It is about eight kilometers to the center of Geneva . The main building of the European nuclear research center CERN in Meyrin , right on the French / Swiss border, is also nearby (around seven kilometers away).

The community is located southeast of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park , with which it is associated as an official access point.

history

The place was given the nickname Voltaire in 1878 in honor of the great French philosopher Voltaire , who lived here from 1759 until his death in 1778 (during a stay in Paris ) and had a lasting impact on the place. In 1890 a statue of him was erected in the village. From 1814 to 2015 Ferney was the capital of the canton of Ferney-Voltaire .

With 9,766 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Ferney-Voltaire is the ninth largest municipality in the Ain department. The population increased by 13.3% between 1999 and 2010.

Economy and Infrastructure

Ferney-Voltaire is the seat of the FDI World Dental Federation , the International Association of Dentists and the Public Services International (PSI, English. Public Services International, PSI ), the global association of public sector unions. The Center international d'étude du xvIII e siècle, (CIEDS) has its seat there, it pursues research projects and their publication on all aspects of the 18th century .

Ferney-Voltaire is served by a SNCF bus line, which connects Sauverny with Bellegarde-sur-Valserine station , where there is a connection to the TGV to Paris . Ferney-Voltaire is served by three transports publics genevois bus routes. The F bus line connects Gex with the Genève-Cornavin train station , the Y bus line connects Ferney-Voltaire with Thoiry via Geneva Airport and the O bus line, which has been in operation since the end of February 2011, connects Meyrin Gravière, where there is a connection to the Geneva tram , with the Lycée international de Ferney-Voltaire. From 1900 to 1932 Ferney was the terminus of the Gex – Ferney-Voltaire tram ; there was also a tram line to Geneva until 1938.
