Mairie

Ornex is a French municipality with 4410 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Saint-Genis-Pouilly in the Gex arrondissement and is a member of the Pays de Gex municipal association .

geography

Ornex is located at 476  m , about nine kilometers north-northwest of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The former farming village extends in the Pays de Gex , on a wide ridge modeled by the Ice Age Rhone glacier , in the Geneva basin, near the foot of the Jura , near the state border with Switzerland .

The area of the 5.64 km² municipal area covers a section of the Pays de Gex. The area with only very weak relief forms a broad ridge that merges to the north into the plain at the foot of the Jura. The southern part of the municipality is drained through the Gobé to the nearby Lake Geneva . To the north, the municipal area extends into the extensive forest area of the Grand Bois and the plain at the foot of the Jura. The northern border runs along the Lion . At 481  m , Ornex's highest point is reached on the Maconnex plateau.

In addition to the actual village, Ornex also includes various hamlets and new housing developments, including:

  • Maconnex ( 480  m ) on the plateau south of the Lion
  • Villard-Tacon ( 470  m ) in the Lion valley

Neighboring communities of Ornex are Ferney-Voltaire in the south, Prévessin-Moëns and Ségny in the west, Versonnex in the north and the Swiss community Collex-Bossy in the east.

history

Ornex was first mentioned in a document in 1153 under the name Ornacho ; The name Ornay has been handed down from 1286 . The place name probably goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Aurinius or Orinius and thus means Aurinius' estate (Auriniacum).

While the village church belonged to the estates of the Payerne monastery in the 13th century , Ornex was owned by a local aristocratic family and came to the Lords of Gex as a fief in the 14th century. Along with this rule, the village came under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy in the 14th century . Then Ornex shared the checkered history of the Pays de Gex , with which it finally came to France after the conclusion of the Treaty of Lyon in 1601.

Particularly strong growth rates were registered during the 1980s. Numerous new single-family houses were built outside the old town center. Today the settlement area has grown together almost completely with that of Prévessin-Moëns and Ferney-Voltaire. The local residents of Ornex are called Ornésien (ne) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Ornex was a predominantly agricultural village. Today there are various small and medium-sized businesses. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns of the Pays de Gex or as cross-border commuters in the agglomeration of Geneva.

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the main road N5, which leads from Geneva via Ferney-Voltaire to Gex . Another road connection exists with Prévessin-Moëns. The closest connection to the Swiss A1 motorway is around 4 km away. Even the Genève-Cointrin airport is easily accessible. From 1900 to 1932 the Gex-Ferney-Voltaire tram ran through the municipality. It had two stops in the municipality: Ornex and Maconnex . Today the F bus line of the Transports publics genevois , which runs from Gare Cornavin in Geneva to Gex, stops in the Ornex area at the Ornex-Fruitière and Maconnex stops .

In Ornex there is a state école primaire (elementary school with an integrated preschool ).
