Prévessin-Moëns is located at 470  m , about nine kilometers northwest of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The double community, consisting of two former farming villages, extends in the Pays de Gex , on a broad ridge in the Geneva basin modeled by the Ice Age Rhone glacier , near the foot of the Jura , near the state border with Switzerland .

The area of the 12.07 km² municipal area covers a section of the Pays de Gex. The central part of the area, which is only slightly in relief, is occupied by a broad ridge that merges northward into the plain at the foot of the Jura. To the south, the municipal ban extends to the edge of the Ferney-Voltaire plain. This southern part is drained to the nearby Lake Geneva by a side stream of the Gobé . To the north the parish extends into the plain at the foot of the Jura, which is drained by the Lion to the Allondon . At 483  m , the highest point in Prévessin-Moëns is reached at Moëns. The area extends in a narrow strip to the southwest into the extensive forest of the Bois Tollot.

The double municipality is made up of the two villages Prévessin ( 472  m ) and Moëns ( 461  m ), both located on the ridge, as well as several hamlets and new housing developments, including:

  • Magny ( 435  m ) on the edge of the Ferney-Voltaire plain
  • Les Molands ( 440  m ) below Moëns
  • Les Pugins ( 445  m ) south of Prévessin
  • Vesegnin ( 465  m ) in the valley of the Lion
  • Brétigny ( 466  m ) on the plain at the foot of the Jura

Neighboring communities of Prévessin-Moëns are Saint-Genis-Pouilly in the west, Chevry and Ségny in the north, Ornex in the east, Ferney-Voltaire in the southeast and the Swiss communities Meyrin and Satigny in the south.

history

Prévessin was first mentioned in a document in 1257 under the name Privissins. Over time, the spelling changed via Privissin (1307), Previssins (1332), Privisins (1369), Privissinus (1389) and Prevessin (1526) to the present name Prévessin, which has been recorded in writing since 1734. Moëns appears as Moyns in the documents as early as 1211. According to this, the names Moynx (1236), Mouins (1267), Moynum (1436), Moyn (1526) and Moingz (1573) have been handed down. The place name goes back to the Burgundian personal name Modo and with the suffix -ens means something like 'among the people of Modo'.

A priory was founded in Prévessin in the 12th century by the Payerne monastery . The prior also ruled over the village. In the 14th century the area became dependent on the Lords of Gex. Along with this rule, Prévessin and Moëns came under the suzerainty of the Counts of Savoy in the 14th century . After that, both villages shared the eventful history of the Pays de Gex , with which they finally came to France after the conclusion of the Treaty of Lyon in 1601. On January 1, 1975, Prévessin and Moëns merged to form today's dual community.

Attractions

The village church de l'Assomption in Prévessin was rebuilt in the 17th century using parts of the previous building and redesigned in the 18th century. Only a few remains of the former priory have survived, including a tower from the 14th century. In Moëns and Vesegnin there are former manor houses.
