Saint-Genis-Pouilly is a French municipality with 12,544 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . She is a member of the Pays de Gex municipal association .
geography
The small town is on the border with Switzerland , only ten kilometers from downtown Geneva . Immediately west of Saint-Genis-Pouilly rises the Crêt de la Neige, the highest peak in the Jura .
Neighboring communities of Saint-Genis-Pouilly are Chevry in the northeast, Prévessin-Moëns in the east, Satigny (Switzerland) in the south, Thoiry in the southwest, Sergy in the west and Crozet in the northwest.
history
The municipality used to be called Pouilly-Saint-Genis (or Saint-Genix ). It was not until 1887 that the current place name was determined. The name Pouilly comes from the Latin "Appolliacum"; most likely a temple in honor of Apollo stood here in Roman times . Over the centuries, Saint-Genis became bigger and more important, it was a post-relay, but it wasn't until the construction of the CERN in the mid-1960s that it began to flourish as a small town.

With 12,544 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Saint-Genis-Pouilly is the sixth largest municipality in the Ain department. The population increased by 39.4% between 1999 and 2010.
