The Saint-Martin church of Versonnex

Versonnex is a French commune with 2,176 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Gex in the Gex arrondissement and is a member of the Pays de Gex community association .

geography

Versonnex is located at 479  m , five kilometers southeast of Gex and about twelve kilometers north of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The former farming village extends in the Pays de Gex , on the Oudar , in the plain at the foot of the Jura , in the northern part of the Geneva basin, near the state border with Switzerland .

The area of the 5.89 km² municipal area covers a section of the Pays de Gex. The area is drained by the Oudar and its right tributary Lilette , both of which flow through open valley plains . East of the village, the Oudar flows into the Versoix , which forms the border with Switzerland. It leads its water in a winding course through a forest valley that is clearly deepened into the surrounding area to Lake Geneva . The rest of the community area has only a very weak relief. It occupies the plain at the foot of the Jura, extends in the south into the forest area Bois de sous Villars-Dame and in the north as far as the moorland of the Étang de Cessy . On the plateau the highest point of Versonnex is reached with 509  m .

In addition to the actual village, Versonnex also includes various hamlets and new housing developments, namely:

  • Le Bois Chatton ( 478  m ), an extensive new housing estate (built from 1973) between the Lilette and the forest area to the south
  • Les Genévriers ( 475  m ), a new housing estate built from 1974 north of the Oudar
  • Villars-Dame ( 462  m ) in the valley of the Lilette

Neighboring communities of Versonnex are Ornex in the south, Ségny in the west, Cessy and Sauverny in the north and the Swiss communities Versoix and Collex-Bossy in the east.

history

Versonnex is first mentioned in a document in 1200 under the name Versenay . Over time, the spelling changed via Versenai (1234), de Versenayco (1279), Versonay (1300) and Versonex (1528) to the current name Versonnex, which has been in writing since 1697.

In the Middle Ages , Versonnex belonged to the Lords of Gex. Along with this rule, the village came to the Counts of Savoy in the 14th century. Then Versonnex shared the eventful history of the Pays de Gex , with which it finally came to France after the conclusion of the Treaty of Lyon in 1601.

Attractions

The originally Gothic parish church of Saint-Martin was redesigned in the 17th and 19th centuries.

With 2176 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Versonnex is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the Ain department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century, a marked increase in population has been recorded again since the early 1970s. Particularly strong growth rates were registered from 1968 to 1990. During this time the population has increased more than tenfold. Numerous new single-family houses were built outside the old town center. The local residents of Versonnex are called Versonnexois (es) in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Versonnex was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . Today there are some small and medium-sized businesses. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns of the Pays de Gex or as cross-border commuters in the agglomeration of Geneva.

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the D15 departmental road from Ferney-Voltaire to Divonne-les-Bains . Further road connections exist with Cessy and the Swiss Collex-Bossy. The closest connection to the Swiss A1 motorway is around eight kilometers away.

In Versonnex there is a state pre-school ( école maternelle ) and a state primary school ( école élémentaire ).
