action

Radautz is a small town in southern Bukowina in what is now Romania. Bukovina was a region where many different ethnic groups lived together peacefully. One of the largest population groups, the Jewish , was almost completely destroyed and driven out of Bukovina. This film traces the life stories of the last survivors of the Holocaust and tells of the time when Bukovina still existed as a multilingual and multiethnic country.

The film describes the past world of the fruitful coexistence of different people and the rich Jewish culture in Bukovina in general and in Radautz in particular. A first version of “A Disappeared World” was awarded at the Vienna Video & Film Days 2004. The new version that is now available was presented at the 2005 Jewish Film Week in Vienna.

Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, the Center de recherche français de Jérusalem and the Leo Baeck Institute New York are making the film.
