The Friedensbrücke station on the Vienna underground line U4 is located in the 9th district of Alsergrund . It is named after the Friedensbrücke , first named in 1926 , right next to the station. The station is at ground level between the Treppelweg along the Danube Canal and the Spittelauer Lände.

history

The station, designed by Otto Wagner on behalf of the Commission for Transport Systems in Vienna , was completed in March 1900 and opened on August 6, 1901 under the name Brigittabrücke and with the operational abbreviation BB as part of the Danube Canal line of the Vienna steam light rail . On December 8, 1918, it had to be closed due to the coal shortage that prevailed after the First World War , but was then reopened on October 20, 1925 for the new Viennese electric light rail . The unusually wide central platform, which points to the past as a separation station , is striking . The WD and DG / GD light rail lines branched out here until 1976, and the connecting arch led from the station to the Nussdorfer Straße junction on the belt line. The station has been served by the U4 since May 8, 1976, and in addition to Heiligenstadt , Friedensbrücke was one of the first two underground stations in Vienna.

Before the completion of the Friedensbrücke , which opened on October 3, 1926 , the station was also renamed the Friedensbrücke on September 21, 1926, its new abbreviation was FB. From 1941 to December 1945 the station and bridge were called Brigittenauer Brücke , the abbreviation at that time was BB.

The exit on the south side leads via fixed stairs and an upward escalator to a reception building in Otto Wagner style on a forecourt and to the stops of tram lines 5 and 33 in the direction of Westbahnhof or Josefstädter Straße , which stop directly on the Friedensbrücke. There is an elevator at the north-facing, little-used exit in the direction of Gussenbauergasse . This part was retrofitted in the 1990s.
