The Spittelau waste incineration plant is one of three thermal waste treatment plants operated by Wien Energie . Its specialty lies in the facade designed artistically by Friedensreich Hundertwasser . With a total installed capacity of 460 MW, the plant is the second largest producer in the district heating network (this small part of 22 percent is shared by the three thermal waste treatment plants of Wien Energie) in the City of Vienna.

The facility, located in the northernmost part of the 9th district on the Danube Canal , was completed in 1971 on the site between the Franz-Josefs-Bahn and the connecting arch. The Spittelau thermal waste treatment plant was built at its current location to provide heat for the New General Hospital about two kilometers away .

The ongoing adaptation to the latest flue gas cleaning technology led to the retrofitting of the thermal waste treatment plant in Spittelau with a flue gas wet scrubber (1986/89) and a modern denitrification and dioxin destruction system (1989). At the same time, the outer facade of the entire district heating plant was redesigned by Friedensreich Hundertwasser after a major fire in 1987. The planning was carried out by architect Peter Pelikan in collaboration with Alexander Marchart , Roland Moebius and Waagner-Biro . The previously sober functional building has turned into a work of art that is supposed to represent a harmonious symbiosis between technology, ecology and art. In Osaka / Japan , a thermal waste treatment plant based on the Spittelau was built in a similar style.

The thermal waste treatment plant housed in the plant with a throughput of 260,000 tons per year is integrated into the network and feeds an annual average of 60 MW of heat into the district heating network (base load coverage). In addition, 400 MW of thermal output can be produced in five additional gas or gas / oil-fired hot water boilers to cover peak demand. The electrical output is 6 MW. In total, around 40,000 MWh of electricity and 470,000 MWh of district heating are produced. With this amount of heat, more than 60,000 households in Vienna are heated annually.

The CO 2 emissions in 2009 amounted to 26,593 t.

Background of the oversized cap

Facility seen from the underground line. The cap can be seen at the back on the right.

A special feature is an oversized cap on a small tower of the building: When the artist Hundertwasser ran out of patience during a discussion with the client, he angrily left the group with the words "I'll put my hat on", a phrase in Austrian for giving up (not pleased). The builders then said a "good idea" and added the cap to the system.
