The Kettenbrückengasse station of the Vienna underground line U4 is located in the 5th district of Margareten . It is laid out in an open, low-lying area, has two side platforms and is located in the cut of the route of the U4 parallel to the Wien River between Wehrgasse and Kettenbrückengasse. It is named after the chain bridge built between 1828 and 1830 over the Vienna River.
history
The station was built for the lower Viennese line of the Vienna steam light rail . In their early plans it was sometimes referred to as the Chain Bridge or the Rudolf Bridge , before it finally got the name that is still used today. The station, designed by Otto Wagner , was built on behalf of the Commission for Transport Systems in Vienna , completed in November 1896, and opened on June 30, 1899. It was closed after the First World War in 1918 and reopened in 1925 as part of the new Vienna Electric Light Rail. Between 1925 and 1976 the station was served by the DG / GD and WD lines. This was followed by the reconstruction for the requirements of the underground with its larger profile. The original Otto Wagner style was only partially preserved, for example with the listed building ( list entry ) in the city center . The platform areas were rebuilt according to the panel system of the U-Bahn architects with the signal color green intended for the U4 line. On October 27, 1980, the first scheduled train on the U4 reached the Kettenbrückengasse station. On April 2, 1999, the station's elevators went into operation.
Exits lead into town via fixed stairs through the small reception building directly to the Chain Bridge. The Saturday flea market - one of the largest of its kind in Austria - and the Naschmarkt can also be reached here. The Eggerthgasse and the Falco stairs can be reached via the exit out of town using a fixed staircase (i.e. not barrier-free) and a lift. The Market Office of the City of Vienna is also nearby. Due to the catchment area of the Karlsplatz station, a drug scene has settled above all at the Kettenbrückengasse exit .
