The cable-stayed bridge in Vienna crosses the Danube Canal in Vienna and connects the districts of Simmering and Leopoldstadt . It is part of the A4 Ost Autobahn and leads traffic into the city to the Prater junction.

location

In the vicinity of the cable-stayed bridge on the A4 east highway are the Freudenau horse racing track , the Freudenau harbor , the Simmering waste disposal company and the MA 48 parking area .

history

Between 1973 and 1975 the 229 meter long bridge planned by the engineering office Alfred Pauser was built by Porr and Neue Baugesellschaft Auterried & Co and is not supervised by MA 29 of the City of Vienna , but by ASFINAG .

Construction and construction

The main support span of the cable-stayed bridge, which is at an angle of 45 degrees to the Danube Canal , is 119 meters between the 18 meter high pylons , the side panels each span 55 meters. The rod-shaped pylons made of reinforced concrete have dimensions at the pylon head of 1.1 meters across the bridge direction and 2.15 m perpendicular to it. The 2.8 meter high deck girder is a prestressed concrete box girder with a 15.3 meter wide deck .

Since the available space did not allow otherwise, a 110-meter-long half of the bridge was built parallel to the Danube Canal on each bank. The two bridge bearings were positioned in a so-called “ sand pot ” that was filled with quartz sand , and from here each half of the bridge was built up symmetrically .

After completion of the bridge halves, they were turned towards each other and the missing middle section was made. The sand below the bridge bearings, which was no longer needed, was removed by suction and the bearings were thereby lowered onto the concrete foundations .

The cable-stayed bridge was completely renovated by ASFINAG between 2008 and 2009.
