Olasz ( German Ahlaß , Croatian Olas ) is a Hungarian municipality in the Bóly district in Baranya County . The place has 633 inhabitants (as of 2011).

Geographical location

Olasz is located in the southern part of Hungary, about 20 kilometers southeast of the county seat of Pécs and 23 kilometers west of the district town of Mohács . Neighboring communities are Hásságy , Szederkény and Belvárdgyula .

history

The first written mention of the village took place in 1295 in the form of "Olozy". At that time, the Paulaner Order founded a monastery here, which was dedicated to St. Ladislaus. In 1295 Konrád Óvari had the stone monastery built. It was in the area between Olasz, Hidor and Hásságy. The old village itself was on the Birjánder brook, on the road to Pécs that led to the monastery. French settled here at the end of the 12th century . The place was therefore erroneously called "Olasz" ( Hungarian for "Italian"), because the Hungarians believed that they were Italian colonists. In 1718 southern Slavs were settled.

German families were settled here in the 1720s. In 1728 a farmer, a widow and six smallhouses of German nationality were recorded in Olasz. In 1730 there were even nine German farmers. In 1732, however, there were no longer any Germans in the village. Germans were resettled at the end of the 18th century.

In 1746 a parish was established. The church of St. Maria Magdalena , which was built after a plague epidemic in 1738, soon became a parish church. The church soon fell into disrepair and in 1776 a new church dedicated to St. Philip was built. From 1772 Juraj Papánek was pastor in the parish of Olasz, which includes the places Olasz, Hásságy, Hidor , Nyomja , Birján and Belvárdgyula.
