Juraj Papánek (* 1. April 1738 Kuklov in Senica , Slovakia , then Kingdom of Hungary ; † 11. April 1802 in Olasz , County Baranya , Hungary) was a Slovak Catholic priest and historian .

Life

Papánek came from a family that had been ennobled for their services in the Turkish wars in the 17th century. He attended high schools in Nikolsburg ( Mikulov ) and Pressburg ( Bratislava ) before studying philosophy in Ofen ( Budapest ), law in Eger ( Eger ) and theology in Fünfkirchen ( Pécs ). He was ordained a priest in 1763 and was then chaplain in Tolnau and Németbóly from 1763–1767 , pastor in Vörösmárt ( Zmajevac , now Croatia) from 1767–1772 and pastor in Olasz until his death, where he looked after the Croatian population. From 1790 he was also district dean .

Due to his numerous historical writings, Papánek earned the reputation of being the first Slovak historian. Of his numerous works, one thing in particular received wide attention: Historia gentis Slavae , 1780. It is the first comprehensive account of Slovak history. In it he put forward the theory that the Slovaks are the autochthonous population of the Carpathian Basin and that the Slavic peoples even had their origin here. Thus, the Slovak language would be the most original Slavic language. He saw legal continuity of the Slovak state from the 9th century, when the Slovaks had co-founded the Hungarian kingdom. In addition, he placed a special focus in his work on the history of the Great Moravian Empire and the Slavic mission through Cyril and Method.

With this historical work Papánek influenced the movement of the national rebirth and plays a not insignificant role in the national development of the Slovak people. However, Papánek was far from superficial patriotism. He confessed himself as a Slovak by birth, as a German by upbringing, as a Hungarian by his nobility and as an Illyrian by his pastoral office.
