The Vienna Simmering traffic station is a traffic junction in Vienna's 11th district of Simmering , which consists of the Simmering underground station and the Vienna Simmering stop of the ÖBB. In addition to regional and S-Bahn trains, long-distance trains from the Regiojet company also stop here. The eastern end of the U3 is also here . It is named after the 11th district. The Laaer Ostbahn crosses the Simmeringer Hauptstrasse here in an elevated position. It leads over the Prater and the Danube into the 22nd district and on to the northeastern Weinviertel .

history

In 1976, the Simmeringer Hauptstraße stop was built at this point . With the collapse of the Reichsbrücke in the same year and the failure of an important Danube crossing , the stop and the route gained additional importance for Vienna's public transport system .

As part of the extension of the U3 underground line to Simmering, instead of the previous Simmeringer Hauptstraße stop east of Simmeringer Hauptstraße, the new Simmering stop was built on the other side of the street and connected to the underground by means of a connecting structure. On this occasion, the Simmeringer Platz next to the train station was redesigned. The ÖBB stop was later renamed the Vienna Simmering stop as part of a name reform .

The U3 systems extend directly under Simmeringer Hauptstrasse and are connected to the surface by escalators , elevators and fixed stairs. They opened on December 2, 2000 with the release of the fifth and so far last section. At the same time, the new S-Bahn stop was put into operation.

Network connection

In addition to the train and underground stations, Vienna Simmering is also a hub or end point for urban and regional traffic.

The regional bus lines, which ran from the bus station Wien Mitte, which was closed at the end of 2000, to south-eastern Lower Austria and partly to Northern Burgenland, have had their terminus at the newly built bus station since the extension of the U3.

The tram line 71 originally ran from here to Kaiserebersdorf or Schwarzenbergplatz . Tram line 6 was extended to the central cemetery and had a stop here since that day. Tram line 72, which ran from the central cemetery to the U3 station Schlachthausgasse from the opening of the first U3 section to the extension to Simmering, experienced a brief rebirth in autumn 2013 as an amplifier line from the Grillgasse stop to Kaiserebersdorf. After various changes in the line network, tram lines 11 now run from Otto-Probst-Platz and 71 from the stock exchange to Kaiserebersdorf.

You can also change to city bus routes 69A (formerly to the Südtiroler Platz bus station, now the main train station), 72A and 73A (to Kaiserebersdorf). Line 15A (to Meidling) also ran to Simmering for some time after the extension of the U3, but was shortened to Grillgasse again due to the low occupancy rate.

Design

During the construction of the eastern station building of the station Simmering in 2000 was the road in the forecourt in front of the output Kaiser Ebersdorfer Frog Prince Fountain of Gottfried Kumpf set up. The sculpture consists of a 300 kg heavy frog king made of painted bronze , which sits on a water-bathed hemisphere made of stainless steel . The height of the well is 2.3 m.

The construction of the subway in Vienna is usually accompanied by archaeological research. Especially during excavation for the underground system turning east of the station Simmering were discoveries expected since the Roman in the Simmeringer main street Limes road is suspected, the Vindobona with Carnuntum Association. The Roman road, however, could not be found, but the medieval Simmeringer Hauptstrasse was. In the reception building at Kaiser-Ebersdorfer Straße / Strachegasse, the archaeological findings are displayed in a display case wall. Some of the artifacts found are shown as well as a cross-section of the street; The original medieval road gravel lies on the floor of the showcase.

The parish church of Altsimmering , the Romanian Orthodox church and the Simmering cemetery are located near the train station .
