Interior of the parish church in Altsimmeringen

The Altsimmering parish church is one of the oldest churches in what is now Vienna. According to excavations, there was probably a church in Simmering around 1000 years ago. It was first mentioned in a document in 1267 as a subsidiary church of St. Stephen and is consecrated to St. Lawrence . In 1440 the parish of Simmering also included Erdberg , Sankt Marx , Landstrasse and Rennweg. On a painting by Lucas van Valckenborch from 1590, the church at that time can be seen with a Romanesque nave and a Gothic chancel. The church tower is a former defensive tower that was integrated into the church facade.

In the course of both the first and second Turkish sieges , the church was badly damaged and only poorly repaired. On July 11, 1746, the construction of today's parish church began, not least because of the increasing population of Simmering, for which the old church building no longer offered the necessary capacity. The builder was Matthias Franz Gerl , who gave the church its current late baroque appearance. The upper part of the tower was redesigned at the beginning of the 19th century. In 1910 it was dedicated to St. Laurentius high altar painting, which was created in 1819 by Josef Hendel, has been exchanged for a painting created in 1882 by Heinrich Bauer junior. The interior of the church was renovated in the 1970s, during which the chancel was enlarged and the high altar from 1777 had to give way to a new popular altar .

Since 1933 there has been a war memorial in honor of those who died in the First World War from Simmering directly on the church wall. After the Second World War , a memorial plaque was also placed in memory of the victims of this war.
