The Romanian Orthodox Church in Simmering

The Romanian Orthodox Parish Church of the Holy Resurrection is a church in the 11th Viennese district Simmering . It is the seat of the Romanian Orthodox Community of Vienna, the legal representative of the Romanian Orthodox Church - Patriarchate of Romania for Austria and belongs to the Nuremberg-based diocese for Central and Central Europe .

history

Originally, the Romanian Orthodox religious community in Vienna took part in the masses of the Greek Orthodox community in the Greek Church on the Holy Trinity at the meat market . From 1906 the services were held in an apartment rented for this purpose on Löwelstrasse, which was later converted into a small chapel. Due to the desire for an own church building in 1908 - in the year of the 60th jubilee of the throne of Emperor Franz Joseph I - a church building fund was founded, the "Romanian-Greek-Oriental Emperor Jubilee Church Building and Church Community Founding Association" . Money was collected for years, but the economic situation and inflation as a result of the First World War made it impossible to implement the construction project soon.

It was not until 2001 that a suitable plot of land on Simmeringer Platz was acquired. This had been redesigned the year before as part of the extension of the U3 underground line to Simmering. In 2002 construction work began according to designs by the team of architects baldassion architektur (Miki Ionescu and Georg Baldass). The opening ceremony took place on April 27, 2003, the Romanian Orthodox Easter Sunday . On the street facade there is the arched portal with pictures and an inscription as well as a small church tower. The floor of the interior is made of gleaming granite , the iconostasis is by Gheorghe Gheorghita Vornicu, the frescoes were created by Vasile Lefter.

In the immediate vicinity of the church are the Vienna Simmering train station , the Altsimmering parish church and the Simmering cemetery . About two kilometers out of town is the Vienna Central Cemetery , where a Romanian Orthodox department is located.

A second church building for the Holy Resurrection is being built in the Nordbahnviertel ( Romanian Orthodox Church (Vienna-Leopoldstadt) ).
