history

The cemetery was probably laid out in the Middle Ages as part of the construction of the parish church in Altsimmering and connects directly to the church on a hill in the north. The Josephine reforms of Emperor Joseph II almost led to the closure of the mountain cemetery in 1783, since cemeteries in town centers should be closed if possible. However, it was received due to a petition from the population to the emperor. The first of several extensions took place in 1799.

In 1896, shortly after Simmering was incorporated into Vienna, the existence of the cemetery was again up for discussion, as the nearby central cemetery made the continued existence of the comparatively small local cemetery seem unprofitable. But this time too, district representatives and the church managed to avert the threatened closure. Instead, the cemetery was expanded to the north. In 1905 its area was already over 22,500 m². After the Second World War , work began on repairing the damage caused by the Battle of Vienna , including building a new cemetery wall. In the following decades there were further modifications and extensions. Among other things, the funeral hall was rebuilt from 1978 to 1979 according to designs by the architect Erich Boltenstern .

General

The Simmeringer Friedhof is administered by the cemetery master Traude Fritz on behalf of Friedhöfe Wien GmbH and comprises around 8,000 grave sites on an area of 56,955 m². The main entrance is at Unter der Kirche 5 , but you can also go from the parish church to the cemetery via a staircase.

The neo-Gothic grave chapel of the Rinnböck family, built in 1869, is located at the foot of the Kirchberg . Josef Rinnböck was Simmering in the 19th century council and founded the so-called Rinnböckhäuser , between the beginning of the Simmeringer main street and notified also after him Rinnböckstraße lie. The chapel has been owned by the City of Vienna since 1999 and was renovated from 2011 to 2012. Since then, the first floor of the chapel with the altar has been open to the public for the first time.

Around the parish church, some preserved grave monuments remind of the old mountain cemetery. Directly on the church wall is a large memorial stone for the fallen and victims of the First and Second World Wars .
