Otmar Brix

Otmar Brix (born July 16, 1944 in Vienna , † July 26, 2003 in Barcelona ) was an Austrian consultant, sports official and politician ( SPÖ ). Brix was a member of the Austrian National Council from 1994 to 2001 . Brix died of a heart attack in 2003 while attending the 2003 World Swimming Championships in Barcelona as President of the Association of Austrian Swimming Clubs .

biography

Brix attended elementary and secondary school from 1950 to 1958 and learned the profession of radio mechanic from 1958 to 1961. He did military service from 1963 to 1964. Brix worked as a radio mechanic from 1958 to 1970. From 1970 to 1980 he was a commercial clerk and department head and from 1980 to 1988 district secretary of the SPÖ Vienna- Simmering . Between 1988 and 1991 Brix was the Deputy State Party Secretary of the SPÖ Vienna, between 1991 and 1995 he was again an employee and from 1995 a consultant.

Brix was district councilor in Simmering between 1978 and 1985 and changed from 1985 to 1994 to the Viennese state parliament and local council . Between November 7, 1994 and May 8, 2001 he represented the SPÖ in the National Council and then worked as district chairman of Simmering until his death .

Within the party, Brix was the section chairman of the SPÖ in Simmering between 1973 and 2003, and was a member of the district executive committee. He was also deputy district party chairman from 1989 to 2003. In addition to his political activities, Brix was a board member of the Austrian Olympic Committee from 1994 to 2003 and President of the Association of Austrian Swimming Clubs from 1989 to 2003. He was buried at the Simmering cemetery .

Honors

Brix was the recipient of the Grand Decoration of Honor in Gold for services to the Republic of Austria . After his death in 2004 in Simmering, Otmar-Brix-Gasse near Neugebauten Castle , for the revitalization of which he had campaigned, was named after him. In 2005 a student residence was opened in Simmering in combination with a residential project as an Otmar Brix facility .
