Lucas van Valckenborch (* 1535 or shortly afterwards in Leuven ; † buried on February 2, 1597 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a Flemish painter .

Life

Lucas van Valckenborch was probably trained in Mechelen , at least he is recorded in the registers of the Guild of St. Luke there. It is not known who his teachers were. In 1564 Jaspar van der Linden was his pupil. In 1566 the Protestant Valckenborch left their hometown together with his brother Marten, Hans Vredeman de Vries and Hendrik Steenwijk the Elder for reasons of faith and went first to Aachen , then to Liège . In Antwerp he came into contact with Archduke Matthias , the governor of the Spanish Netherlands , and entered his service in 1579. When Matthias resigned as governor in 1581, Valckenborch followed him to Linz as a chamber painter . In 1592/93 he moved to Frankfurt am Main , where his brother had been living since 1586. Van Valckenborch was granted citizenship there in 1594 and died in 1597.

Some relatives were also painters: in addition to his brother Marten van Valckenborch , these were also his sons Gillis van Valckenborch and Frederik van Valckenborch .

power

Lucas van Valckenborch was a landscape painter who succeeded Pieter Brueghel the Elder . He preferred to paint seasonal pictures depicting rural work and civic pleasure. In addition, market images were created in the different seasons. The landscapes sometimes appear topographically precise, although they follow the old concept of the so-called “ world landscape ”, ie they are inventions.
