The Aspern Nord is a community station in the 22nd Viennese district , Donaustadt . It is located on the northern edge of the Seestadt Aspern and consists of the Vienna Aspern Nord train station of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) on the Marchegger Ostbahn (Vienna – Bratislava route) and the Aspern Nord subway station of the Wiener Linien on the subway Line U2 .

construction

The station consists of two ground-level central platforms parallel to each other (for underground and ÖBB rail transport), which are connected to each other via a station passage across the street. The length of the ÖBB platforms is 190 meters. The main entrance is on the south side of the station at Nelson-Mandela-Platz in the still undeveloped northern part of the seaside town. Here there is a bus station, also to be built a park-and-ride facility, whose job it is supposed to be private transport from the feeder road clasp Aspern airfield of the Vienna outer ring expressway to relocate (S1) on public transport. The north exit of the station leads to Mayredergasse, where there is another bus stop as well as the Neubreitenlee settlement a short distance away.

Building history

Construction work began in spring 2011. The subway station was part of the fourth expansion stage of the Vienna subway and was opened on October 5, 2013 as part of the extension of the U2 line from Aspernstrasse to Seestadt Aspern. The ÖBB station Vienna Aspern Nord started operations on October 1, 2018. It replaced the Vienna Hausfeldstrasse station, which was closed the day before, and thus assumed its transitional function between the underground and regional trains. The S80 ended up at the Vienna Erzherzog-Karl-Straße stop until the beginning of December 2018 .

Design

Twice world history was in Aspern wrote: In 1809 won here Archduke Charles over Napoleon Bonaparte , and in 1912 opened the Aspern airfield , the then largest and most modern airport in Europe. With reference to these events, the Bavarian artist Stephan Huber installed two large-format murals on the two ends of the platform in the subway station. The picture Aspern Affairs (1809) on the western wall is based on a map of the greater Vienna area, which is surreally alienated and has been supplemented in the style of a collage with innumerable true, false and ironic information; the right part of the picture deals with the battle of Aspern . The mural Aspern Affairs (1912) on the eastern end wall deals in the same style with the Aspern airfield and with the history of Vienna at that time. The pictures are each 10 × 6 meters in size. They were created by the artist on the computer and then printed out on photo paper and laminated behind glass. The installation Lebenslinien , also by Stephan Huber, is located on the longitudinal skylights of the platform . Colorful, labeled stripes are intended to graphically represent the lifetimes of some prominent people. The lines were applied to the glass surfaces by stove enamelling.
