The Ölhafenbahn or Wiener Ölbahn or Lobaubahn is an Austrian railway line in Vienna that connects the Vienna Stadlau station with the Lobau oil port . The route with the number 190 01, used exclusively for freight traffic , has a length of 5.0 kilometers and a standard gauge of 1435 mm.

After the Lobau Hafen railway station, the works line to the central tank farm begins. It comprises 42 switches and 37 tracks with a total length of around 13.2 kilometers. The trolleys are made available at the filling stations with a total of four cable capstan systems.

Old route

The original route of the railway line, which was opened on October 6, 1941, branched off to the right at the southern end of Stadlau station after the Viehtriebbrücke (today's bridge over Neuhaufenstrasse), and led via a steep ramp (16 per thousand gradient) over the old Stadlauer Sports field and crossed under the Mühlwasserbrücke of the Ostbahn in a narrow left curve (r = 180 m). The route then ran a short distance along the Untere Mühlwasser and then after a right curve through the area of the "KGV Fischerwiese" to the current route on the Raffineriestraße. The reason for this route at the time was the poor condition of the Mühlwasserbrücke, where it was not possible to lay a third track.

New route

Due to massive complaints from local residents, it was re-routed in 1987 - the embankment had already started the previous year. In April 1987 the superstructure work started by the company "Schmidt & Metzger" and on May 30, 1987 the track was swiveled near the Schilloch.

The new route is 1.527 kilometers and is 534 meters shorter than the old route. It branches off from the existing platform 3a at Stadlau station and runs over the Mühlwasserbrücke and Kleehäufel down to Raffineriestraße and then, after crossing under the Ostbahn at the Lobau stop, meets the previous route. The curve radii could be extended from 180 meters to 350 meters, and the maximum gradient is now only 5.2 per thousand instead of the previous 16. Furthermore, the trailer load of the tank car trains could be increased to 1400 tons.

The last time on this day was the 80470 train from Lobau station to Stadlau station (arrival at 5:25 a.m.) via the old track. On June 1, 1987, train 80469, with its scheduled departure at 6:30 a.m. in Stadlau, was the first train to travel the new route.

meaning

In Austria under National Socialist rule , the construction of the Danube-Oder Canal began on the orders of the Reich Ministry of Transport , which meant that a port was required on site, the construction of which began in December 1939. In the period that followed, primarily crude oil that was shipped up the Danube from Romanian oil fields was handled there . The onward transport took place exclusively on the oil port railway, which was built for this purpose and transported the oil (and later also coal ) to the Vienna Stadlau junction ten kilometers away.

Today the oil is transported through pipelines that have been laid to the port , so that the original purpose of the railway line no longer exists.
