The Stammersdorfer Lokalbahn , now also known as the Weinviertel-Landesbahn , was a single-track, 29.196 kilometer long and non-electrified branch line in the Lower Austrian Weinviertel . The line, licensed as a local railway , was last operated by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and connected Stammersdorf with Groß-Schweinbarth . Passenger trains ran on the Obersdorf – Groß-Schweinbarth section until December 14, 2019.
history
On June 7, 1884 , the steam tramway line Stephaniebrücke - Stammersdorf was opened together with the Floridsdorf - Groß Enzersdorf line. Two years later, on June 15, 1886, the steam tramway Krauss & Comp. freight traffic on the entire route. On December 2, 1897, the Lower Austrian provincial committee recommended the state parliament to build a local railway from Stammersdorf to Auersthal for the first time . Almost a year later, on September 4, 1898, the technical report for the project of a standard gauge local railway from Stammersdorf to Auersthal was available. In addition to Stammersdorf, the stations Eibesbrunn H , Pillichsdorf , Groß Engersdorf HL and Bockfluss were planned.
Based on the concession document of November 16, 1901 , the steam tramway company formerly Krauss & Comp. Began in August 1902 under the direction of the Lower Austrian State Railway Authority. with the construction of the Stammersdorf - Auersthal local railway . The technical and police acceptance of the route took place on April 15, 1903, and opened on April 26, 1903.
Formally, the route, which was important for the supply of Vienna with food (especially milk), was taken over by the City of Vienna on January 1, 1907, when it was the company Dampftramway Gesellschaft formerly Krauss & Comp. acquired through purchase (including 229 servants). Due to various difficulties that arose , the company was not taken over until the second half of 1907. The Dampftramway company formerly Krauss & Comp. was dissolved on January 3, 1908 and deleted from the commercial register on December 29, 1914 .
With a certificate dated January 6, 1908, the local railway company Stammersdorf-Auersthal was granted the concession to build and operate a local railway between Auersthal and Schweinbarth. On August 9, 1909, the line to Groß Schweinbarth was opened. In 1911 the line to Stammersdorf was electrified and the remaining section was operated as a railway from then on. In Stammersdorf there was a track connection between the two types of operation, for example to be able to transfer luggage carts . Use was made of this until 1931.
On May 1, 1913, the Lower Austrian State Railways took over the route, and with retroactive effect from January 1, 1921, the Austrian Federal Railways .
In May 1988, including several other local railways in the Weinviertel, the Stammersdorf – Obersdorf section was discontinued and in 1995 the tracks were removed.
2011 laid the Austrian Post as part of a commemorative stamp series, the 90- cents - stamps 100 years Stammersdorfer local train on.
Schweinbarther cross
As a result of the abandonment of the Stammersdorf – Obersdorf section, the remaining route was combined with the Gänserndorf – Mistelbach local railway , with connections to the Vienna S-Bahn in Obersdorf (S 2 and S 7) and in Gänserndorf (S 1). These two lines once formed the Schweinbarther Cross together with the Bad Pirawarth – Dobermannsdorf railway . When the two sections Obersdorf – Groß Schweinbarth and Gänserndorf – Groß Schweinbarth were combined, the nickname was given to the new connection, not least because of its curious course: from Obersdorf via Auersthal the route went west past Raggendorf, like a branch line to Groß -Schweinbarth and Groß-Pirawarth, there again in the opposite direction and east past Raggendorf to Gänserndorf.
This route combination was operated by the ÖBB. The 5047 series diesel railcars were used, and test drives were also carried out with Desiro railcars .
The Obersdorf – Groß Schweinbarth – Gänserndorf route was usually driven every hour on working days. On weekends, the trains only ran every two hours. The Obersdorf – Groß Schweinbarth – Bad Pirawarth route was usually also driven every hour, which resulted in an approximately half-hourly service with trains crossing in Bockfließ in the Obersdorf – Groß Schweinbarth section .
The train service was stopped with the timetable change on December 15, 2019.
Various plans provide for a continuation of the route, such as a takeover by GKB . However, this would only succeed if the state of Lower Austria ordered these transports. The ÖBB plan to leave the route in the meantime.
Steam horse and bicycle cycle path
Between 2002 and 2005, the steam horse and bike path was laid out on the route of the former local railway from Stammersdorf to Pillichsdorf and opened on September 10, 2005. The EuroVelo 9 cycle path also runs over large parts of this route. In 2010 the cycle path was extended via Großengersdorf, Bockfließ, Strasshof to Deutsch-Wagram. The route is 39.2 kilometers long and runs mostly on an asphalt bike path.
