The Schottenring – Stammersdorf tram route is part of the Vienna tram and runs from the Schottenring in the city center to the former suburb of Stammersdorf north of the Danube. The route serves districts 1, 2, 20 and 21. Today, route 31 mostly runs on it, while lines 2, 30 and 33 run on sections of the route.
history
Steam tramway
The "Dampftramway Krauss & Comp." Opened its second steam tram route on June 7, 1886 in Vienna. It ran from the Stephaniebrücke (today: Salztorbrücke ) to Stammersdorf. The route led over Obere Donaustraße along the Danube Canal, past Augartenbrücke , to Gaußplatz, Jägerstraße, Stromstraße and Marchfeldstraße, then to Friedrich-Engels-Platz , over Floridsdorfer Brücke to Floridsdorfer Hauptstraße and Brünner Straße to Stammersdorf train station. On April 26, 1903, the Stammersdorfer Lokalbahn , the connecting line from the Stammersdorf train station to Auersthal , was opened. The route later began on Franz-Josefs-Kai ( block loop over Esslinggasse , Gonzagagasse and Zelinkagasse) and has since led over the Augarten Bridge. In 1907 the route was taken over by the "Municipality of Vienna - Urban Trams".
1910 until the end of the Second World War
The section from the Ring to Floridsdorf was electrified by January 18, 1910. On October 17, 1911, the line to Großjedlersdorf and on December 30, 1911 to Stammersdorf station was electrified.
The line signal "31" was assigned to the former steam tramway line. From May 16, 1927, trains ran from the Ring to Stammersdorf under the line signal "331", trains to Großjedlersdorf under the signal "231". Only the short trains to Floridsdorf were designated as line “31”.
The Stammersdorfer Lokalbahn, operated as a railway since 1911, was taken over by the Lower Austrian State Railways on May 1st, 1913 . There were track connections between the two types of operation until the 1930s. In May 1988 the Lower Austrian traffic from Stammersdorf to the north was stopped, in 1995 the tracks in the Stammersdorf train station were removed.
post war period
Tram operations across the Floridsdorf Bridge , which had been destroyed in the war, were resumed on May 19, 1946 after it was repaired. From 1950 on, the so-called American railcars, which were bought second-hand in the USA and which were very popular with passengers and staff because of the large amount of space (46 seats, 47 standing places) and the upholstered seats , also ran on today's 31 route until the 1960s .
The relocation of the line from Floridsdorfer Hauptstraße to Matthäus-Jiszda-Straße - Schöpfleuthnergasse - Schloßhofer Straße on June 4, 1961 served to improve the connection of the Floridsdorf station (Vienna S-Bahn) to the tram.
On June 6, 1964 was in Stammersdorf instead of the previous dome terminus Wendeschleife opened, the use of equipment car allows.
The route through Obere Donaustraße was closed on August 23, 1978, and trains have been running on Obere and Untere Augartenstraße ever since.
On September 4, 1982 the three-digit line signals were given up; since then the trains have been running from Schottenring to Stammersdorf under the line signal "31".
Younger past and present
In October 1990, the line on Brünner Strasse in front of Stammersdorf was the last section in Vienna to double-track.
On May 4, 1996, as part of the extension of the U6 underground line to Floridsdorf, the tram line "32", which was partially running between the Ring and Floridsdorf, was discontinued. Line “31” was relocated between Gaußplatz and Stromstraße to the route of the previous line “32” in Klosterneuburger Straße and Wexstraße, instead of through Jägerstraße as it was before. The tracks in Jägerstrasse were retained for operational purposes.
Since December 23, 2000, low-floor vehicles have been running on line “31”.
On April 16, 2007, a new route was opened between the Van-Swieten-Kaserne and Stammersdorf stops , right next to Brünner Strasse, and the old route at Regnerweg was abandoned.
In autumn 2018, the turning loop at the Schottenring terminus was rebuilt in order to be accessible from the ring lines. This should enable replacement traffic during the U2 closure from 2019. The tram line 31 was temporarily extended on the Franz-Josefs-Kai to the Schwedenplatz station during the construction site .
Amplifier lines
On June 5, 1928, line "31/5" was set up between Westbahnhof and Floridsdorf, a combination of line "5" and "31". Since November 3, 1959, this line has only been running towards the city center as far as the Josefstädter Straße subway station ; on March 10, 1986, it was extended out of town to Gerasdorfer Straße. On May 4, 1996, with the relocation of line 31 in Brigittenau, the line was renamed the main line and "33".
On December 27, 2004, this line was shortened in the direction of Stammersdorf to Friedrich-Engels-Platz. Line "30" was set up between Floridsdorf and Stammersdorf as a reinforcement for line "31".
