The Schlingerhof is an urban residential complex from the 1920s in the 21st district of Vienna , Floridsdorf , at Brünner Strasse 34–38 with 478 apartments.

The building gained historical importance as one of the focal points of the “February events” in 1934, which, depending on political attitudes, were referred to as the Austrian civil war or the February uprising. Not centrally coordinated SDAP fighters without heavy weapons competed against the superiorly equipped executive of Engelbert Dollfuss ' dictatorship government, reinforced by the Heimwehr , and were very quickly defeated.

The complex bears the name of the first social democrat sent by the population of the 21st district in 1905 after it was incorporated into the Vienna municipal council - Anton Schlinger .

Characteristic

The Schlingerhof can be described as a classic community building. It stands out thanks to its clock tower with a sheet copper spire. A large market square (Floridsdorfer Markt) was integrated into the facility. It replaced the “Am Spitz” market (see here ), which had become untenable for traffic reasons.

history

The Schlingerhof was built from 1924 to 1926 according to plans by Hans Glaser and Karl Scheffel on the grounds of the former Floridsdorf gasworks .

On February 12, 1934, there was a clash in the Schlingerhof between the socialist Schutzbund and the armed forces and the police . The members of the Schutzbund blocked off Brünner Strasse and barricaded themselves in the facility. On Tuesday, February 13, two tanks broke through the barricades and the attackers penetrated  the residential complex for the first time at 1 p.m. - after artillery fire - but were not able to fully occupy and evacuate it until around 4:30 p.m. As in the case of other municipal buildings occupied by SDAP fighters, only non-explosive practice ammunition was deliberately used in the artillery fire. Apparently there were no fatalities from the shelling. According to a manuscript by the Floridsdorf police chief Heinrich Petri from 1937, when the prisoners were being transported to the police station 400 meters away, both the Schutzbund and the executive fired into the train of prisoners and guards, with the first shots fired by the Insurgents should have fallen. A total of 13 people were shot, namely two fighters from the Schutzbund, a police officer and 10 uninvolved non- combatants . According to police statistics, 350 Schutzbund members were captured.

The plant today

The Schlingerhof still fulfills its original function as a residential complex and is home to several smaller companies (hairdresser, sports center, etc.) and a kindergarten. Traditionally, the Schlingerhof is a section bar of the Floridsdorfer SPÖ and the young generation Floridsdorf.
