Anton Schlinger (born July 31, 1870 in Abtsdorf , Bohemia , † October 21, 1912 in Vienna ) was an Austrian trade unionist and politician ( SDAP ). He was a member of the Vienna City Council and the Austrian House of Representatives .

Life

Born as the son of a smallholder and farm laborer, Schlinger attended elementary school and initially got by with odd jobs. In 1888 he moved to the then still independent community of Floridsdorf , where he initially worked in a nursery. He later worked as an unskilled worker in a screw factory, where he was most recently a milling cutter .

In addition to his job, Schlinger took part in popular education courses organized by the Association of Workers' Associations in Floridsdorf and the surrounding area and subsequently became active in the trade union movement. He joined the metalworkers' union in the early 1890s and was elected to its local group committee. His union involvement led to his resignation. However, Schlinger found accommodation in the Floridsdorf locomotive factory , where his future wife, Katharina Schlinger, recruited him for the social democratic party.

Schlinger subsequently rose to the position of chief shop steward of the Social Democrats in Floridsdorf and, in 1894, to chairman of the metalworkers' union. In addition, in 1896 he founded the newspaper “ The Voter ” (from 1898 “Volksbote”), which he oversaw as editor and publisher.

His party-political activities again led to a conflict with his employer, which is why Schlinger, mediated by his party, worked as a health insurance controller and became an official of the Floridsdorf district health insurance fund. In 1897 he led the election campaign of the Social Democrats in Floridsdorf and was elected chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Floridsdorf in 1899. After he had been elected to the local council in Floridsdorf in 1903, he became local council in Vienna in 1904/1905 after the incorporation of Floridsdorf into Vienna. Furthermore, from 1900 Schlinger was constituency representative of the Social Democratic Party and club chairman of the Vienna Social Democrats. He ran for the first time in 1901 for the Reichsrat and was finally able to obtain a mandate in the electoral district of Austria under the Enns 36 in the Reichsrat election in 1911 . He was subsequently active in the Price Committee and Wine Culture Committee; at the same time, he was still a member of the Vienna City Council.

The Schlingerhof in the 21st district, built between 1924 and 1926, was named after him. From 1920 until the renaming by the Austro-Fascist corporate state in 1934, today's Hermann-Bahr-Strasse in Floridsdorf was also named after Anton Schlinger.
