Within the Floridsdorf district, the district borders as a central district in the southeast with the district Donaufeld , in the northeast with Großjedlersdorf and in the northwest with Jedlesee .

The center is northwest of the New Danube . In the southeast, Floridsdorf encloses the section of the uninhabited Danube Island between the north bridge and the north railway bridge .

history

Market place around 1895

Floridsdorf is a more recent village that was founded in 1786 after bridges were built over the arms of the then widely ramified Danube . The settlement was built on the Leopoldauer Hutweide east of the large fork in the streets of Prager Straße and Brünner Straße , the former imperial roads to Prague and Brno, where the Jedlersdorf am Spitz settlement named after this fork was founded in 1782 (independent 1804–1874). The place initially belonged to Leopoldau and was later named after the Klosterneuburg abbot Floridus Leeb , who had given monastery grounds to settlers in 1786. When it was founded, today's Schlosshofer Strasse, which led via Schloss Hof im Marchfeld to Pressburg , became the main street of the village. South of Floridsdorf, the Great Tabor Bridge led over the then main arm of the unregulated Danube towards Vienna.

The railway age in Austria began in 1837 with test drives between Floridsdorf and Deutsch-Wagram, some 13 km away . The Kaiser Ferdinands-Nordbahn soon became the most important railway line of the monarchy, as it connected Vienna with iron works and coal mines in the north and northeast of the empire . The Floridsdorf station was not expanded to Vienna Floridsdorf station until the 1960s , when, after the Nordwestbahnbrücke was closed , the trains of the Nordwestbahn also ran via Floridsdorf.

In 1894, following an initiative by kk governor Erich von Kielmansegg, based on a resolution of the Lower Austrian state parliament, the municipalities of Floridsdorf, Donaufeld and Jedlesee and the Großjedlersdorf district of Neujedlersdorf south of the Brünner Straße rapid transit station were merged to form the larger municipality of Floridsdorf. 1901–1903 the community built a representative town hall , but was not able to finance other necessary investments from its own. In 1904, on the initiative of the Mayor of Vienna Karl Lueger, it was incorporated into Vienna along with other localities - the 21st Viennese district of Floridsdorf was created .

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the former municipality of Floridsdorf shows a green, two-handled vase with three red flowers and some green leaves on a silver background. As a speaking coat of arms , the Latin word for flower ( flos ) refers to an interpretation of the name of the district.

Culture and sights

The high-rise office building Florido Tower , which was built in 2001, has become a landmark of Floridsdorf. The foundation stone for today's Floridsdorf parish church by architect Robert Kramreiter-Klein was laid in 1936. In Floridsdorf is also under the direction of Gerald Pichowetz standing Gloria Theater .

Through the Danube Island and the adjoining Old Danube , the district has an extensive leisure and swimming area. With the Floridsdorfer Wasserpark and the Floridsdorfer Aupark near the Danube there are two large parks.

Transport and infrastructure

The main route of the Vienna S-Bahn ends at the Vienna Floridsdorf train station and is one of the two end stations of the U6 underground line . Several trams and public buses also stop here. For road traffic, Floridsdorf is particularly accessible through the Donauufer Autobahn and Floridsdorfer Strasse , which intersect at the Floridsdorfer Bridge .

The Floridsdorf Social Medical Center is located on the border with Donaufeld and one of the most unusual grammar schools in Vienna is anchored on the Danube Island with the school ship . The training ship is located on the floor of the cadastral community of Floridsdorf, whose border runs on the right bank of the Danube, but does not stand or, better still, swim in the Floridsdorf district, which is bordered on the left bank of the Danube, but in the neighboring district of Brigittenau. In the cadastral community of Floridsdorf there are also the grammar schools BRG 21 Franklinstrasse 21 and BRG 21 Franklinstrasse 26, the educational institute for kindergarten pedagogy of the City of Vienna (Patrizigasse 2) and the Academy for Social Work of the City of Vienna XXI (Freytaggasse 32).
