The training ship, in the background the Danube Tower

The Bertha-von-Suttner-Gymnasium is a grammar school in Vienna on two boats coupled to one another on the left bank of the Danube. It is located on the Danube Island between Floridsdorfer- and Nordbahnbrücke . Colloquially it is often referred to as the training ship . The name of the school and the ship refers to the Austrian writer Bertha von Suttner .

history

The training ship (stern view)

In order to compensate for the failure of the Soviet Union as a client, the ÖSWAG - Korneuburg shipyard, together with the Austrian Institute for School and Sports Facility Construction and the spatial department of the Vienna City School Council at the time, considered building a ship as a school .

The idea of the "floating school" was presented to the public on October 14, 1991 by Mayor Helmut Zilk . The advantages were that there were no problems in obtaining the building site and the school could also be relocated if the demand situation changed. Even so, there were numerous skeptics.

In the purchase contract, the Korneuburg shipyard undertook to deliver a general secondary school (AHS, see school system in Austria ) with 36 classes at the beginning of the school year 1993/94 .

Despite the efforts of the workers, the preparations for the closure of the shipyard delayed the completion date, and so the new school on Donauinselplatz could not be moved into until Easter 1994. Since then it has housed 36 classes as well as the administration rooms, the gym is located on a third floating body, also used by the University Sports Institute (USI) Vienna.

In the school years 1994/95 and 1995/96 the Döblinger Gymnasium moved entirely to the school ship because of the general renovation of the school building.

Oddities

Walter Wasserbauer , who used to live on board, knows both the training ship and the students better than anyone else. He worked as a pipe fitter on the construction of the school ship and was school caretaker until mid-2009 .

On September 21, 2001, the 189 meter long “Bertha von Suttner” was rammed by a push convoy and slightly damaged. A crack in the ship's side at water level had to be sealed by the Vienna fire brigade . The responsible captain of the cargo ship committed hit and miss .

The ship can only be reached on foot from Floridsdorf and is also one of the Floridsdorf schools. Geographically, it is located (except for the anchorages on the quay) in the 20th Viennese district of Brigittenau , as this extends to the left bank of the Danube, but on the other hand belongs to the cadastral community of Floridsdorf , whose border runs on the right bank of the Danube and thus extends into Brigittenau .
