The Floridsdorfer Wasserpark is a small part of the Old Danube designed as a park in the 21st Viennese district, Floridsdorf . The park was laid out from 1928 to 1929 and has an area of 143,000 m², around a third of which is taken up by water.

Location and connection

The water park is located at the northern beginning of the Old Danube. On its west side it borders on the driveway to Floridsdorfer Brücke , on its south side partly on the Donauuferautobahn and on the east side on the north railway bridge , whereby the north railway embankment separates the water of the park from the rest of the old Danube. The north side points in the direction of Floridsdorf center. The park is located near the Vienna Floridsdorf train station and can be reached by tram line 31 of Wiener Linien .

history

The first Danube regulation from 1870 to 1875 shut down the former main arm of the Danube . The northwestern end of the resulting Old Danube began to desolate as wild deposits formed. The necessary fortification and redevelopment of this area became one of the largest projects of the Vienna City Garden Authority under director Friedrich Kratochwjle . From 1928 to 1929, the Floridsdorf Water Park was built on the basis of plans by the garden architect Kratochwjle instead of the swampy area.

To make the water park more attractive, deeper trenches were dug in various places and the material obtained was used to raise the remaining parts of the park. This created two ponds connected by canals and a large island. The paths were lined with gneiss stones and illuminated with lanterns. Steep, small bridges in the Japanese style were built over the deeper trenches, which are supposed to look like canals.

In the park there is also a bronze sculpture of a pair of storks, which was made by Anton Endstorfer in 1958.

Recreation area and bird sanctuary

Today the Floridsdorf water park is an important part of the local recreation area in Vienna's Danube area, which is formed by the Danube Island , New Danube and Old Danube.

Since warm Danube water seeps into the water of the park through the Hubertusdamm , it does not freeze completely in winter and is used as a wintering area for water birds .
