Anton Endstorfer

Anton Endstorfer (born July 15, 1880 in Liesing , Lower Austria , Austria-Hungary ; † September 2, 1961 in Vienna , Austria ) was an Austrian sculptor and medalist .

Anton Endstorfer was born on July 15, 1880 in the then still independent Lower Austrian municipality of Liesing. As he did not have the opportunity to attend the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna for financial reasons , he took lessons from various sculptors, among other things, before he became an employee of Carl Wollek in 1900 , for whom he then worked until 1913. After he received the Kaiserpreis donated by Emperor Franz Joseph I from private funds in 1915 , he became a member of the Künstlerhaus Vienna that same year . Endstorfer also received various awards and public recognitions in the 1930s. Since he was married to a Jewish woman, he became in the times ofNational Socialism was banned from working and during this time worked as an unskilled worker in Edwin Grienauer 's studio . After the Second World War he was accepted back into the Künstlerhaus and worked as a freelance sculptor until 1957. In 1949 he was given the professional title of " Professor ".

Endstorfer's works include various medals, bronze figures and woodwork as well as works for urban residential buildings, the so-called art in architecture . These include "Spring Fountain " in Ebert-Hof (Hütteldorfer Straße 16-22) from 1926, the fountain sculpture "Nixchen" in Josef-Scheu-Hof in Drischützgasse 5 from 1926 or a relief for ornamental fountains in Brüßlgasse 34 from 1928. After the Second World War he created, among other things, the sandstone relief "Children with district and city coats of arms" in Gumpendorfer Straße 86 (1949), seven natural stone reliefs (male professions) as the house symbol of the Kapaunplatz 7 residential building , five natural stone reliefs (female professions) as the house sign of facility 10 in Laxenburger Straße-Wienerfeld Ost (1953) or the sculpture “pair of storks” in the Floridsdorf water park . Various other works by Endstorfer can still be found today in urban housing in Vienna. He also created the memorial plaque for Viktor Kaplan at the Mürzzuschlag train station in 1936 .

Endstorfer had his studio, like various other artists, such as Tina Blau or Hans Scherpe , in the amateur pavilion in Vienna's Prater . In February 1939 his lease was terminated by the sculptor and medalist Wilhelm Frass , who had owned the pavilion since 1919.

Endstorfer died on September 2, 1961, a little more than seven years after his wife Irma, at the age of 81 in Vienna and was cremated in the Simmering fire hall .
