history

In the interwar period in Red Vienna , numerous communal residential buildings were built, especially in the outlying districts of Favoriten and Simmering, which were inhabited by many workers . In the period from 1923 to 1926, a total of six community buildings were built around Simmeringer Herderplatz and Herderpark, which opened in 1930 . In addition to the Josef-Scheu-Hof, these were the residential complexes Alfons-Petzold-Hof , Dr.-Franz-Klein-Hof , Friedrich-Engels-Hof , Karl-Höger-Hof and the neighboring Widholzhof .

The Josef-Scheu-Hof was built from 1925 to 1926 based on designs by the architect Franz Wiesmann . Originally it had a central laundry room, two workshops and a pharmacy that still exists today. From 2005 to 2007 the system was renovated, including replacing the windows and doors and connecting it to the district heating system . 24 new apartments have been created by extending the attic .

The municipal housing is named after the composer and musician Josef Franz Georg Scheu , who composed the melody for the song of work that has become an anthem in the social democratic movement .

Architecture and design

The listed residential complex, comprising 187 apartments, has an almost square shape and is delimited by Ehamgasse, Drischützgasse, Herbortgasse and Zehetbauergasse. The facade, which is kept in light and dark brown tones, has led to the residential building being popularly known as the Chocolate Courtyard. The courtyard is due to the obstruction edge of the plant over 2,100 square meters and has a pergola in the center of a pool of water with a designed by Anton Endstorfer Nixchen -Brunnenplastik stands.
