The Friedrich-Engels-Hof is a community building at Ehamgasse 8 in Vienna's 11th district Simmering .

history

In the interwar period in Red Vienna , numerous communal residential buildings were built, especially in the outlying districts of Favoriten and Simmering, which were inhabited by many workers . In the period from 1923 to 1926, a total of six community buildings were built around Simmeringer Herderplatz and Herderpark, which opened in 1930 . In addition to the Friedrich-Engels-Hof, these were the residential complexes Alfons-Petzold-Hof , Dr.-Franz-Klein-Hof , Widholzhof , Josef-Scheu-Hof and the neighboring Karl-Höger-Hof .

The Friedrich-Engels-Hof was built from 1925 to 1926 according to designs by the architects Franz Kaym, Alfons Hetmanek and Hugo Gorge . The community building is named after the politician and Marxist philosopher Friedrich Engels . At the time of Austrofascism and the Nazi dictatorship, the "S" was removed from the inscription, as Engel-Hof the name of the building with this letter lost a political reference that was unpopular for the regime at that time.

From 2006 to 2008 the facility was renovated, including replacing the windows and doors and connecting it to the district heating system . 13 new apartments have been created through an attic extension .

Architecture and design

The listed residential complex, comprising 177 apartments, is located behind the Herderplatz elementary school, which was built in 1911, and is delimited by Herbortgasse, Ehamgasse and along a concave curved street front by Herderplatz. The eastern part of the block no longer belongs to the Friedrich-Engels-Hof, there is one residential building that has existed since 1900 and two other residential buildings along Grillgasse.

The most striking feature of the residential complex, like the neighboring Karl-Höger-Hof designed by the same team of architects, is a geometric facade decor surrounding some of the windows. There is a fountain in the courtyard, the stone sculptures Striding Man and Striding Woman were designed by Karl Stendal. There is a memorial plaque next to the entrance gate commemorating the Feuchtbaum family, who were driven out of the house by the National Socialists in 1938.
