The Dr.-Franz-Klein-Hof is a community building at Herbortgasse 24 in Vienna's 11th district Simmering .

history

In the interwar period in Red Vienna , numerous communal residential buildings were built, especially in the outlying districts of Favoriten and Simmering, which were inhabited by many workers . In the period from 1923 to 1926, a total of six community buildings were built around Simmeringer Herderplatz and Herderpark, which opened in 1930 . In addition to the Dr.-Franz-Klein-Hof, these were the residential complexes Alfons-Petzold-Hof , Josef-Scheu-Hof , Widholzhof , Karl-Höger-Hof and the neighboring Friedrich-Engels-Hof .

The Dr.-Franz-Klein-Hof was built from 1924 to 1925 according to designs by the architect Karl Krist . Originally it had, among other things, a daycare center, a dental clinic and several workshops and business premises. The dental clinic still exists today as the center for dental treatment of the Viennese regional health insurance fund, and some of the shops in Grillgasse are currently in use. From 2003 to 2007 the facility was renovated, including replacing the windows and doors and building a new playground.

The community building is named after the lawyer and politician Franz Klein . A memorial plaque in the entrance area in Herbortgasse, which was designed by Wilhelm Frass in 1932, commemorates him. Another plaque on the corner of Am Kanal and Grillgasse commemorates Franz Mayer and the Schutzbund paramedic Johann Zabinsky, who were killed in Grillgasse in the course of the February uprising of 1934.

Architecture and design

Console figures in the courtyard

The listed residential complex, comprising 223 apartments, is bordered by Herbortgasse, Grillgasse, Herderplatz and Am Kanal . The differences in level of the terrain are compensated by stairs.

Striking style elements are the plaster decorations on the outer facade, pronounced roof gables and the use of pointed arches in various facade elements, for example the entrance portal, the arcade corridors and some ground-floor windows. On the outer front of the arcade in front of the former daycare center are two stone console figures designed by the sculptor Siegfried Bauer , which depict seated children.
