Originally, part of today's Herderpark was the front garden of the elementary school on Herderplatz, which was built between 1910 and 1911. At the time of the First World War and until the 1920s, there were allotments on the site . From 1923 to 1926, several municipal buildings, which are now listed, were built in the vicinity , including the Josef-Scheu-Hof and the Dr.-Franz-Klein-Hof . Finally, the area was redesigned into a park with an integrated children's outdoor pool based on a design by the garden architect Friedrich Kratochwjle . It opened on May 4, 1930. After the end of the Second World War , the park was expanded, an air raid shelter gave way to a ball playground, and the promenade along the former Vienna Neustädter Canal (today a rapid transit line runs there) was also expanded in favor of the park.

In 2006 the park was comprehensively revitalized by the landscape architect Ferenc Bodi, and in September 2006 it was reopened. The area of the park, which is over four hectares in size, now includes a summer or family pool , playgrounds and sports fields, a basketball and streetball facility , an area specially designed for young people with table tennis tables and a lounge area, as well as a section specially designed for senior citizens of the park, which includes chess and mill tables and an arbor with plenty of seating. There were also innovations in terms of garden architecture, for example some paths were specially planted. B. lilac, ornamental cherry and ornamental apple paths, which are intended to give the park a colorful note, especially in spring.

In the center of the park, flanked by rose beds , is a fountain built in 1931 with the stone sculpture “Mermaid” designed by Franz Sautner . In the western part of the park there is the Herderpark youth sports facility, which is over 6,000 m² in size, as well as an almost 400 m² fenced dog area . The family pool, built in 1929, is located in the northern part of the area and has a pool with around 520 m² of water. The bath building, which was completely renovated in the 1990s and listed as a historical monument, was badly damaged by a fire in January 2009. After the fire ruin was demolished, the wooden building was reconstructed in agreement with the Federal Monuments Office, and the pool was reopened in July 2009.

The name of the park was analogous to the adjacent Herderplatz, which was named in 1911 after the philosopher and poet Johann Gottfried Herder (1744–1803).
